Anyone had experience of running 2talk VOIP through this?

Been on Starlink for a few weeks now, and the few "landline" calls I've had, have been fine.

Is anyone using Starlink with a geo-unblocking service such as DNS4me?

  • Does it play nicely with CGNAT?
  • How often does it change your IP address?
  • What's the streaming performance like in general assuming an unobstructed view of the sky?

I'm keen to get rid of my crappy 9Mbps ADSL connection which does have the one advantage of a static IP address.

I use a DNS based geo unblocking service.  It works great.  Though…
The public IP address does change every 1-6 days.  DNS update is scripted to keeps up with changes

The other issue is sometimes the service will say that another account is using the same IP address as you (Pitfall of CG-NAT)  These means you will be at the mercy of whatever their region selection is.

you can attempt to reboot you dish to possibly obtain a different IP Address.  Mixed results.  No guarantee you will get a different one.  I have had better success at Stowing the dish and then resetting power to restore operation.

Or you just live with whatever settings the other user has. Most seem to set to USA anyways. 😀

Well my Dishy arrived in the pouring rain this morning.

The RD Postie said that I'll love it and that they got their's about a month ago.

So after the rain dropped a bit I unpacked everything and was impressed how neatly everything was.... UNTIL I started running the cable out!! OMG what a nightmare. It wasn't coiled in a way that I could just run it out. I ended up spending about 15 mins getting it sorted in what was again pouring rain!! And yes I was very careful how I handled it while removing it from the packing.

That aside the setup was very simple and apart from me being impatient and not waiting for things to boot properly everything came up nicely. The first speedtest resulted in just over 200Mbps/35Mbps. Happy with that. Has been pretty consistent around the 150Mbps mark.

I'm running it off a UDM Pro on the WAN1 port with my previous 40Mbps radio link setup as a failover on WAN2. Tip for beginners, the SFP+ WAN2 port on a UDM will only do 1000/10000Mbps. As my radio is only 100Mbps I had to pop an old switch in the middle to get it to connect. That caused some head scratching!!

Dishy is currently sitting on the grass waiting for a pole to be put up once the rain goes away. Found moving it even slightly helped the speeds. The iPhone app didn't report any obstructions but moving about a metre further south made a noticeable difference. Guess that's one of the benefits of living on a nice flat property just outside Featherston.

Going to keep the radio link for a little while to get an idea of how many drop outs we get. If it's not too noticeable I'll cancel it.

Glimmer of hope for publicly-routable IPv4 addresses being available instead of CGNAT - a couple of users from the same ground station reporting they were assigned non-CGNAT addresses

Are you sure the UDM won't let you disable auto-negotiation on the SFP+ port and manually specify the 100 Mbps link speed?

My MikroTik switch has these options for its SFP+ ports

Nope only gives you 1000/10000Mbps even though the SFP is a 10/100/1000Mbps version. A quick Google confirmed.

Mounted securely on the roof in place of the old Sky dish:

Yeah it's not going to be bug-free up there either, but at least I can control the bugs around the house a bit more than in the grass.

I'm more concerned with birds sitting on it now, obstructing the field of view. "A bird dropping packets", shall we say?

Can I ask how you reduced the pipe diameter on the sky mount to snuggly fit dishy's pole.. oh dear that doesn't sound appropriate at all...

Maybe wrapping something around the Starlink pole like electrical tape?

I had to do that even with the Starlink pole mount as I could hear it rattling as it moved in the wind.

I cut off a short piece of 40mm PVC pipe and slit it down its length so that it could expand and slip over dishys pole.  That takes up the gap almost perfectly on my standard sky dish mount.

Great question. Solving that problem took longer than setting up Dishy, climbing on the roof, removing the old dish and setting it in place combined!

I happened to have some alu strip that I fashioned into a couple of sleeves. My metalworking tools are a little limited in lockdown, but I managed to make two of these:

I had measured several times but somehow it still managed to be too tight to fit in despite sanding down. In the end I made a single fatter one and used that instead of two.

I removed the spring clip inside the Dishy pole, drilled a 12mm hole near the top of the old Sky pole, then fitted Dishy and the packer into the pole and secured it all with a 12mm galvanized bolt.

This is obviously a problem a lot of people are going to have, maybe I should start manufacturing! 😄

That is a brilliant solution. I wish I'd thought of it, could have saved me hours! 😂

This is what I also did, but I took it a step further and cut the PVC pipe to a length so that it rested inside the steel pipe on top of the brace bolt so that it didn't slide down inside the 45mm pipe. When you're balancing at maximum reach of a cherry picker with a 45 degree pitch roof you need all the help you can get.

Thanks All, I tried taking the slack up with insulating tape but it flexes too much, I'm guessing any movement is magnified when trying to lock onto a satellite 550Km's away...

I just drilled a hole through the sky pole and bolted through the existing dishy hole. Then I drilled a second hole through the sky pole AND dishy a couple of inches lower and at 90deg to the original hole. With a second bolt through there it is rock solid.

You guys not worried about water getting down the gap and rotting out the Sky pole from the inside?

There should ideally be some sort of cowl around the joint.
