Hi all,

I have a DSL540g standard modem I got off telecom, connecting to xtra on their totalhome plan.

Speed's fine, I'm pretty satisfied with my internet except with one gripe.

When downloading with bittorrent and getting speeds over about 150kbps total, I find that the connection dies for about a minute, and then comes back again, only to die about 15mins later.  Over and over and over and over.  My modem was originally giving error/warning alarms, although I've updated the firmware to take xtra's version off and just have the latest NZ, non-xtra version and now it doesnt give me the error.  But as far as I remember it was something about a congested something or rather.  I did a bit of googling on the error and no one really knew what was up, although one post in an aussie forum suggested it could be the isp overselling the line.

Telecom deny any wrongdoing.

So I've lived with it for ages, and just recently I saw something about crappy modems that can't handle large number of connections at once.  So I'm wondering maybe it's the modem?

Now, if it is the modem, can anyone suggest one that won't fall over all the time?  Surely this mustn't be normal.  On the subject of modems just quickly, I have a wrt54gl with ddwrt and would love to get a modem that could bridge to this so it could do the routing and stuff.

Incase this helps, this is my "ADSL status" page:

Local/Remote Tx Power:  12.31 dB / 19.63 dB

SNR Margin: 14.0/12.0 dB
Line Attenuation: 24.5/17.0 dB
Loss of Signal: 0/0
CRC Errors: 3/463
Data RateL: 7200/864 Kbps
Latency: Interleaved/Interleaved

common issue with the old dlink's, pretty much any new linksys, netgear, 3com should be fine.

your stats look ok.
you might wana get your line tested for any interference
some DSL lines need you to use a splitter while connecting a phone instrument
there might be other factors too...
