I just saw something on 3news regarding this, a company which has backing from the french government running 2 cables from auckland to noumea and one to Australia with a link in there to Hawaii. They just need a major Telco/ISP to be a long term customer first (I did hear TelstraClear mentioned)

So if Pipe goes ahead then NZ could have 3 links overseas within a few years :)

Interesting. Here's the article in text form:

Unfortunately it won't be in direct competition with SCC, because it will be going from Auckland to New Caledonia to French Polynesia to Hawaii. That's not a very straight line:

(a quick mock-up I just made. No doubt wrong, but basically what it appears it will be)

Yeah that was my first thought, it will need the Southern Cross cable to complete the last leg to the USA unless there is another cable it can connect with

Would they have to use SCC for the last leg, there must be more cables in Hawaii than the SCC's

There are 3 other cables between Hawaii and NA proper. This map is pretty cool
