I recently reinstalled Windows XP onto my computer and lost everything so I had to contact Telstra for the settings for the interenet etc. My modem and settings are all fine but i still cannot connect to the internet. i get the messages above (in subject). also, when the desktop appears, i get a message saying that Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close yet i wasn't even on the internet? any ideas???

Are you on DHCP from your router ? Or a static IP ?

If on DHCP, try giving your computer a fixed IP with gateway, ISP's DNS etc and see if that works.
Try pinging IP address such as 60.234.1.1 (Orcon DNS) and see if you get a reply.
