Hi,

I am quite confused with my download speed. help please.

I am currently on the Orcon Platinum+ Plan, and i live at Kelvin road Remuera, which is a carbinet area, but my download speed stays no more than 1Mbps, its funny, the upload speed is even better than that, heres some numbers.






ADSL Line

Status:
Cable connected

Line mode:
ADSL2+

Maximum line rate:
960 kbps (downstream) / 1016 kbps (upstream)

Noise margin:
5.7 dB (downstream) / 5.9 dB (upstream)

Line attenuation:
49.2 dB (downstream) / 32 dB (upstream)

14.7 dBm (downstream) / 12.5 dBm (upstream)

Disabled




I am sure that all the modem settings are correct, the modem is from Orcon with no problem, someone said it may be the house wiring problem, so i did a test. I connected my modem at the point of entry of the main cable which is from the street to my house, so theres no jackpoints connected, this would tell me the actual speed i could reach in my situation, the result is it did the same thing, then i was sure ,theres nothing i can do to solve this problem, I had to ask for help from orcon.

I called Orcon today, the staff said he would transfer the line to the better speed, I didnot really understand what he would do for me, just asked would my download be better than before, he said yes, and asked my to restart the modem after 10 mins, i did so, it did improve, but like nothing at all, only a few hundreds.

I have contacted Orcon several tims for help, but nothing helpful came back. Now I am wondering what i can do to solve this problem.

I'm guessing you don't have a master splitter? If not have you tried a basic test and removed all phones and tried your speed? Your attenuation is horrible which is why your speeds are so poor.

Did you get better speeds before you were cabinetised? 

The solution will be one of two things - either your house wiring is dodgy or you're suffering from mid point injection with the installation of the cabinet since Orcon don't install their equipment. Your best option may be a move back to a wholesale plan and off the Orcon+ network if this is the issue.

Hi, if you are in a cabineted area and on an Orcon+ plan then you are advised to move to a non + plan, ie via telecom wholesale. This is probably what the CSR was refering to, however it would take a day or two for Chorus techs to actually move your line across.

If nothing improves in a day or two I would advise you call Orcon back and asked to be moved to a Telecom wholesale plan which will be fed via the cabinet.

Orcon has some information about the issue here:

However, their article sugar coats the real effects imo!

In practice when your area gets cabineted and you are connected via the cabinet, Orcon need to switch your connection over to being temerniated on Telecom wholesale equipment in the cabinet (instead of passed through to Orcon equipment in the exchange).

The Orcon techs/helpdesk should be pretty familiar with this issue/process.

All you really should need to tell them is that you are currently on an Orcon+ plan and that your area has been cabineted and you're getting horrible adsl sync speed/performance now.

They will likely offer to change you to a non + plan, I'm not sure if there is any change in price as a result.. it would pay to ask about that.

You don't have too switch ISP, Orcon can switch your connection to be provided over Telecom wholesale equipment in the cabinet rather than Orcon equipment in the exchange (that will definately be better for you as you are connected via the cabinet) and Orcon will still be your ISP for phone and internet.

Whether switching ISP to Telecom on Big Time is a good idea for you is really a different question altogether.

It heavily depends on how you use the internet and if you can live with the pro's and cons of Big Time's traffic shaping/management.

Some people hate the limitations of Big Time others can live with it no problem.

Other ISP's offer ADSL plans that use the Telecom wholesale equipment in the cabinets so there is plenty of choice of provider.  Really it comes down to what are your requirements.

If you are generally happy with Orcon I would just get them to switch your connection to be terminated in the cabinet.  Otherwise I would make a short list of your requirements/usage for phone and net and make a short list of the providers that best meet your needs.

Hi vioneray

Sounds like you need to be moved onto the Cabinet.

Call the helpdesk again and ask to be migrated off your Platnum+ Account onto a Non+ account due to cabinisation.

They will sort you out.

Let me know if you have any issues

I found that the non+ plans are more expensive, I hope thay can get me fixed by othe way.

You will still be on a ADSL2+ connection, the speed will depend on how far from the cabinet you are

Yes go to http://www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps and enter your address in there and you can see the cabinet you are near. According to the site Kelvin Road is on cabinet RUE/CE and you should be able to get both ADSL2+ and VDSL

you can see all cabinet geo location on chorus website, if you are keen to find out. or you can use a calculator to get the rough idea base on your modem data
