cyril7: Hi, yes there is only one approved central filter (well two but one is only ADSL2+ rated and the other VDSL2, I only do the latter now).

The slow speed to the citylink(wellington) server relates to the peering that TCL donot partake in, the other two are more consistant, but a 12Mb/s sync rate should achieve 10Mb/s TCP throughput which is what the ChCh server shows, so optimise any line condition and so will the TCP throughput.

Cyril

Lack of peering would be an inefficient routing issue as you suspected, but Telstra thinks like a monopoly so does not peer with ISPs that don't have interconnection agreements with them.

jimjim: Hi Guys I have had some problems with my DSL disconnecting at random times (and very often) and from reading the discussions on this forum relating to DSL performance have decided that it was time to get a central splitter which seems to have everyone's approval here.

My house has more than 10 jackpoints and 5 of them are in use at any one time (all on single level).  My internet was perfectly fine until we built an extension to the house which added another 5-6 jackpoints.

I have booked a central splitter installation from Telecom (Chorus) for a whopping $298 for the installation.  Can anyone let me know if there is a cheaper and equally reliable option than this?  I live in Auckland (suburb of Manukau).

cheers for your help

Jim

Apparently your existing phone outlets are all daisy-chained? Did you find a spot to run a new cable for the DSL modem outlet? You might need an ethernet link from modem to where you have the computers.

Hi daisy chained is where a socket is connected to another and then to another etc etc. The Ethernet link means the cable between the modem and PC.

I note that you did an addition and added 5more phone points, this is very odd in this day and age. The more common requirement now is to reticulate ethernet not phone, so a structured wiring solution is used that can support reticulation of ethernet and or phone, which if implemented in your setting would/should have circumvented the current predicament.

thanks for your reply cyril

I am not sure i understand your post entirely.  I had one of the guys here on the forum install a central splitter for me yesterday however it did not solve my disconnections.  Is this something to do with daisy chains as you have mentioned in your above post?

I have actually noticed that in the extension there are two ethernet plugs in the office for which I do not know what use or why they have been installed - would you know what these are for and why there are two and not just one?

he is coming back next week to troubleshoot hopefully he can fix it... having internet disconnect every 2 - 30 minutes (randomly) is very very frustrating...

Yes, alas old houses. I've obviously missed the feed to the new part of the house. Don't trust the black cable as always being the first entry point :(

Just wondering if you are using router with tomato install with the ip address forward from your modem to tehe router?

I had similar problems where I needed to add a route to allow the DHCP messages to get passed. basically the DHCp lease would expire and it would not renew and instead request an ip address which results in a drop for a few seconds while it got a "new" ip address.

And there is not always an obvious outdoor entry point to start with...

jimjim: we usually install 2 ethernet jackpoints to each location to allow future flexibility in how you use them, eg an extra computer or something else like a printer or VoIP phone. Where do the ethernet points run from? Perhaps thats where you have located your modem, good idea if you have a few more ethernet outlets around the house.

No idea, but hopefully coffeebaron can identify them for you, are there any other ethernet points in the house?

Went back today, and as suspected there was a feed in the ceiling space that headed off to the extension. Had been cut into the outdoor cable feed.
Also there was a feed to the alarm, so this probably would have caused intermittent issue too, even though the alarm is not monitored.

The two Ethernet jacks are just a single straight through connection from one side of the room to the other.
As for structure cabling this place, that would be quite a major.

thanks for coming back to finish the job coffeebaron.  I checked my broadband uptime this morning and it was 14 hours woohoo looks like my internet is back in business.  Seems like the splitter installation has worked for me.  I will look to get a new ADSL2+ modem later in the year when it becomes available in my area as you have suggested.

Again thanks for your help will happily recommend your services to anyone who asks.

cheers
jim

hi guys

I have just checked some of my phonelines with a phone plugged in (without filter) and I can still hear some modem like sounds on them. It is especially apparent when I unplug the modem (the sound stops) and replug it I can clearly hear it reconnecting to the internet.

Is it normal to hear the modem sounds on other phonelines after a splitter has been installed? I thought after installing a splitter the DSL line would be separate so you shouldn't hear any modem sounds at all.

The reason why I am posting is that checking my modem log it looks like I am still getting disconnected every few hours - although it has reduced significantly still happening and my internet speed has gone up. Just wondering what the problem could be?

See below my modem log: whenever it says DSL linestate down I get disconnected... also what does the firewall error message mean?
