Hello

I'm visiting my parents in Auckland and helping them out with a few IT issues.

One being their dodgy vodafone internet access which keeps dropping out

I've just run a speed test using http://www.nzdsl.co.nz/

Results
Downlaod - 6274 kbps
Upload - 132 kbps

The download speed is acceptable but the upload speed appears to be very low.

Is this normal for NZ conditions?

What could be causing such a low upload rate?

Their connection for the last few days has been very poor. It was losing sync every 30mins or so. I wonder if this has something to do with the huge amount of rain Auckland has had.

Today, which is fine and dry, the connection has been solid but the poor upload speed remains.

Any ideas.

Hi,
They may be on the 'Basic' plan which has a capped upload of ~128kbs. We were on a similar plan, and changing to a different one gave upload speeds of approx 700kbs (uncapped).

We're on the Ideal plan, which had it's upload speed uncapped automatically about 6 months ago.

I suspect they are on a very old legacy DSL plan, ISP's used to sell plans that had limited upload cheaper, these were known as FS/128kbit. FS standing for full speed or whatever max line rate your line can do.

Practically all ISP's only sell FS/FS plans these days, so it should just be a matter of looking at Vodafones current plans and switching/upgrading to that.

Their other issue around drop outs, what make/model ADSL modem/router is being used? How many phone jacks in the house? What era house are we talking about 70's or earlier, 80's, 90's, 00's?

Most homes should be within 2km of a cabinet or exchange by now or will be soon, meaning you can expect 10Mbit/900kb or better.

Note: Lots of old homes have poor phone wiring eg: loads of jack points all daisy chained or split off with T junctions instead of each jack being star wired back to where the line comes in.with it's own cable.  This will have an impact on the max line rates you can get too.

The house is BRAND NEW. They only moved in a few weeks ago.

The house has been fully wired for phone/cat6 etc

The sparky who did the work does not think the problem is with his work.

Hmm, we have seen a few disaster jobs from sparkies so hope you got a good one.

Can you confirm whether the wiring is daisychain or star wired? Do you have a distributor box there, and if so can you post a photo of the wiring inside it? And does the phone line have the usual filter splitting the ADSL and phone services...

You should defiantly speak to Vodafone fixed line tech support about that if they have only just moved in. It would be fairly exceptional circumstances for that upload speed to be the best you can get.




Please note: I have a professional bias towards Vodafone.

There have been a few stories on here of brand new "internet cabled" homes being done incorrectly. Does it go back to a central patch panel and is that where the phone line comes in?

What does the modem sync at?

As stated, based on the real-world speed it's very likely that you're on a 128 kb/s plan. Also, if you're in an ADSL2+ area than the download speed looks rather low so it might pay to check out the wiring too.

With 128kbps upstream you'll struggle to get much more than that downstream.

Oops, you're right, for some reason I thought we were talking about synch rates but of course they'd show faster upstream even if the plan is capped.

If you could post connection settings from the router that would help also troubleshooting, and information about how far you live from a cabinet/exchange using the map at www.telecomwholesale.co.nz

+1, buy doing that we may establish if what you are getting sync wise is on par or not for the location.
