If you are a customer from the beginning of this year you get one of those, and some other situations where an existing customer will get one as well.

TCL are not the only ones doing Fixed IP.

i have had a 'pseudo-static' ip address for years on callplus/slingshot.... it?had a long DHCP lease of 30 days or so, so it effectively never changes.

Yeah same here been with Orcon for years and not once did the IP change except for moving house and changing phone line to them so that's what 3 new IP's in 7~8 years I'm waiting for an email/letter saying I've been warned soon as I get one I'll scan it an post it here for all to see

The sad thing is doing that, you possibly get better quality audio than buying legitimate music off vodafones music store. I buy all my music, but only buy when it is a decent quality compression, which tends to be itunes. Used to use vodafone until they redid their store and the music is now highly compressed down to 128.

Its just a shame you have to go up to 720 to get a significant increase in audio quality on youtube. IMO the audio and video should have seperate options because the 240p is dire, and the 360 is well below acceptable as well.

Im not interested in paying for aweful sounding music, so till the desks are staffed by people that gibe a toss about quality I will keep on acquiring the new stuff elsewhere.

I recently had my house broken into and my laptop stolen.

Made me realise that I can't really complain considering I was doing the same to the music artists. I was kidding myself thinking it was different.

I now have an itunes account and paid for all my music i have so far.

So when you 'stole' music from artists were they unable to play their song as you were unable to use your notebook? It isn't the same thing, son. Not by a long shot.

You could only not complain if you had purchased said laptop hot off the back of a truck from a man who knows a man who was at the pub or something. Copying is not theft, there are many videos educating on the matter.

Don't beat yourself up and don't compare yourself to the scum who break into houses and actually wreck lives. The only winners in your very unfortunate situation are a drug dealer and iTunes (no I'm not drawing a comparison).

FACT should be renamed FACI - it's not theft, it's infringement.

You could look at it this way. Lets say everyone pirated music, there were no retail sales. Clearly that is a problem. The fact that relatively few do this, does not minimise that it is against the law, and you are removing revenue from those in the industry, such as the artist, the producer, and the distributor chain.

I agree, that just because its not physical theft we seem to feel that it hurts no-one, that is a cop out.

Again! I'm not saying it's okay, it's just not the same. I'm sure the pain and gut wrenching sickness he felt is not the same as Lady Gaga's et al.

Amazon and the ilk will not be paying New Zealand Tax either (unless I'm mistaken) - I believe that iTunes does?

Bricks and mortar shops also have to factor in shrinkage (I was lead to believe that a certain major chain store had a shrinkage rate of 33% - that included theft and losses due to damages in transit etc.)

There's no tax on iTunes purchases, no. They're sold by Apple Australia just so they don't have to.

We need to remember here that 1 song downloaded != 1 song not sold

IP is a public good effectively, meaning that it is non-rivalrous in consumption - your consumption doesnt affect anyone elses ability to consume. Pirating a song doesnt do the harm, it is not purchasing the song that does harm. If you were never going to purchase the song, but will download it, then you cant really build a case that your download is hurting the artist - there was no revenue to loose in the first place.

Remember when we used to listen to the radio with our tapedecks and recorded our favourite songs and made music tapes.

From my point of view, life situation, experiences...I've always "taped" my music from the radio way back in the day and shared with my friends (and yeah apparently that was copyright way back then that nobody knew about, even recording tv shows on VCR was considered copyright). The only time I got a album was a Xmas present - it was bought for me, I never really bought music. Maybe the odd cassingle.

Now with technology, the way in which we share music has been via file sharing in this digital age. Downloading MP3's off of many people around the world.

The music industry is not at a loss from me as I never bought from them anyways.

But we can go into debate over and over about this.

All I want to be able to do is:

1/ Have the ability to subscribe to a service from New Zealand to download TV shows and Movies. I want to watch what I want when I want.

2/ The ability to subscribe to a proper service for downloading music in whichever format I want ie MP3, for Ipod etc. currently Itunes does not have MP3 format to go on other devices.
