_Allan: So I read above that some members can do Master Filter, but who do you go to if you would like your wiring checked / replaced?

We had this done last year, in a new home.

I decided to replace all internal phone wiring with Cat6, install a patch panel, master splitter & alarm wired in properly.

I contacted my local master electrician and they did it for us. Was not the cheapest but the end result was fantastic.

When UFB (*shudder*) comes into play, given our suburb is fibre ready, we just need to have the cable from the street to my patch panel replaced.

If you are in Wellington I can pass on the details.

I'm in the Hibiscus Coast, but since asking the question I have identified someone on the coast here that offers the services required.   Thank-you for your response.

Someone who can install splitters has probably been playing around with phone wiring for a bit so could check out your wiring. I would assume @coffeebaron is capable of checking stuff out for you?
Unless you aren't in auckland... look in the yellow pages for a communications wiring company. Plenty of us around the place.

I wonder how hard it would be to create a checklist and make it sticky and then when the system sees a post that contains slow in the subject, pops up and asks them to confirm they have read "this" post?

People don't read. I am sorry, but that's the truth. Most of the posts we lock here are people asking or posting comments on something that's already being discussed, it's in the front page or the first page in the topics list.

There are instructions just above the reply box on which bbcodes are available, and people still can't post links or videos.

There is a link to the Search page in every page on this site, and people post asking where is the search page...

People don't read. Sorry to make it a generalisation, but that's the impression we get on this side of the fence.

Which is why my solution, something employed in a lot of knowledge bases I have worked with and other forums I am active in, could help.

Thanks GZ and coffeebaron. If it hadn't been for this website and forum I would still be at 6Mb on an ADSL2+ connection. Coffeebaron came and sorted out the problem in under an hour just a couple of days after me posting. As I now get 10Mb download and I can read GZ even faster. As freitasm says "Check your house wiring"

The unfortunate thing is that for every person like you who has understood the issue and resolved it there are hundreds who are totally oblivious to the issues and put up with substandard performance because they're simply unaware of the issue.

I know I sound like a stuck record telling every person who posts on here about speed issues and dropouts that internal home wiring is statistically the cause of their issues, and I'd suspect that the vast majority of people would pay absolutely no notice to the comment, and instead focus on blaming their ISP or broadband in NZ overall for their issues.

And to add to that.....

They then proceed to hunt around for the next ISP to switch to, slagging off their current one to anyone who will listen.

All the while forgetting that (typically) all ISP's have to run through the same cables to their house and then definitely through the same internal cabling.

I'm looking for someone in Wellington to inspect and possibly rewire my house, if you could PM me the details of the company you used that would be great.

With regards to this thread, I've never had an ISP support person say a problem could be with my internal wiring or advise me of how to go about getting my wiring checked. It seems a bit rich complaining about customer's problems most likely being with their internal wiring but never actually telling them that.

Perhaps because the people here telling you to look at your wire don't actually work for ISPs and are just users like yourself?

To be honest I don't think it would work as well as it might overseas. In NZ we generally just don't care how fast our internet is. People just assume, oh I am rural so I will have slow broadband. Or it's an old house so broadband will be slow etc. We just don't out any value on proper wiring. You look at homes for sale in the states and they will sell them as 'Ethernet ready' or 'Fibre ready'. People truly want the fastest speeds that are available to them.
Now to go back to an ad campaign, maybe if NZers new the potential for speed is there then more value will be put on wiring your home. Especially when you start talking about UFB.
I work for a cabling company. The boss did up a package for one of the main spec home builders in town here. It was very competitively priced (much less mark-up & hours than one would put on when quoting privately) and was a tiny (very tiny) portion of the complete cost of the home build. The builders were just not interested as they saw it as extra cost being put on the customer/extra cost they would have to absorb because the customer didn't want it. Instead, they just continue to let the electrician wire brand new homes in a daisy chain. Ludicrous. So yes, maybe some education to the masses is what is needed

IMHO a structured cabling system with minimum specs should be part of the building code - just like insulation and double glazing

Double Glazing is not even mentioned in the NZ Building code and there is no specific requirement for a certain level of insulation. It is a performance based system and, in fact, if you accept no more than 30% total glazing DG is not required as an acceptable solution in any NZ climate zone .It has largely been a voluntary adoption.

Generally, I'm not in favour of burdening people with more rules and regulations particularly where it applies to how they conduct their own affairs. There have been some spectacular failures of the rule book in recent years mainly because the rules rely on a small group of influencers.

Also isn't the Geek world always bleating when someone attempts to apply laws to the internet?

Yep - check your house wiring. We have a spaghetti-like setup of seven phone jacks that were put in by the previous owner of our house. We were getting download speeds of just under 2 Mbps.

Yesterday GZ-er, coffeebaron, came and looked at our setup. We discovered that one of the jacks (right next to the jack we use for our router) is a dis-used jack on which the previous owner had a second phone line into the house for a business run from home.

CB was able to install the new master splitter into the old second line at the junction box and this saved us having to run new cable from the master splitter. He plugged the router into the old line's jack and, hey presto; we now have a download speed slightly over 16 Mbps. This is with a cable from the router to the PC.

CB also detected that the wi-fi in our router is faulty. He will install a new router next week so that we get full benefit of the faster speed. I will try and take the old router, a Cisco LinkSys WAG160N, which is only 4-5 months old, back to Dick Smiths under warranty and/or the CGA.

Check your house wiring.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

When I changed to Naked DSL I disconnected the line and plugged it direct into the router.
I then plugged the rest of the house sockets into my ATA, Doubled my speed and stopped random disconnections.

Hmmmm
