Don't know if this has been covered but here goes anyway, i have an old XFX Alpha Dog 8800 GT 512MB card, when i try to watch anything HD, MP4 ect,etc i get a grey pixelised screen in VLC, times out / crashes in WMP, i am guessing  this is down to the low memory on the card (was great when i got it 5 years ago
:p)or am I missing something? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is it one of the 8800GT's with the single slot coolers? If so they don't have a great track record of longevity, the fact you've gotten 5 years out of it is pretty good. Chances are the GPU is on its last legs.

Likely nothing to do with memory, or lack there of.

Try running a video card stress test and see if you are getting any artifacts.

I think Riva Tuner has a stress test functionality from memory, otherwise just Google it...

If you play games with that card, do the games give issues ? Or is it just videos ?
Updated drivers ?

Odd that its more video than games... games usually stress the GPU more than videos.

ID suspect the card is on its way out as well, or just overheating. Try adding some cooling to your system and see if it helps at all... might, might not.....

If you have an onboard card capable of HD - try it through that one and see if there is any difference.
