Asus dwr 1608p3s set to region 4 and with current drivers and firmware plays music CD's and reads data disks but won't play DVD's. It has been known to play some but now plays none. Inserting disk generates a light and some noise. But nothing happens. I try going via my computer and disk shows as blank. Currently running windows xp. Note this is not my pc, looking at it for family while here on holiday but I cannot resolve the issue.

Dirty laser, or failing motor/spindle?

Buy one of those Laser lens cleaning discs. See if that fixes it.

1) Open My Computer
2) Right click on the dvd drive and select explore (xp) or Open in new window (vista/7/8)
3) You should see a couple of folders such as VIDEO_TS and some vob files in there somewhere

If not then you have a faulty dvd drive
If you can, then you have faulty codec software - go to step 4

4) Download and install K-Lite Codec Pack from www.ninite.com
 - tick the codec pack box
 - tick the VLC media player box
 - Download at bottom of the screen
 - run the installer that it downloads

See if that helps.
