Does my freeNAS box have to be hooked up to my router? or can it just be locally attached to my PC? I'm having a hard time configuring it, and i'm following a guide. I really don't want to run a cat-5 cable from my room to the lounge at my flat. Suggestions are very welcome, thank you.
I see no reason why you couldn't run a cross over cable from your PC to the NAS box. You'll have to configure each with a static IP for the NICs you plug the cable into, but other than that you should be fine. You'll probably want a hosts entry on your PC to make things easier to use.
I'm having no luck setting this up at all, I tried wireless dongle on the NAS box to see if it would pick it up on my network, nope. Cross over cable is not working .. Such an effort to get a learning environment up and running without using my home network :(
I got it going in the end, Guess what happened? My main PC didn't have the drivers installed for the NIC so I was faffing around late at night, and didn't even check that off my list for a good hour, Downloaded the drivers, assigned static IPs and made sure they were on the same subnet, and bam, it runs, as easy as pie.
