intel to intel has worked fine for me on similar architectures.

You will have to play with the bios options to get it booting. Perhaps see if you can get the old computer booting ok on IDE emulation before moving it over, as the raid options are sometimes problematic.

And just check you have a recent backup of the important stuff first.

I've done it recently. however success rate largely depends on your OS.

I wouldn't do it for winxp. I had Win7 Pro 64bits, and AHCI was already enabled(potential pitfall), so I went ahead and removed the drive from my laptop and shoved it in my new machine.

Windows Activation came up, I just clicked on activate and Win7 chugged along fine since.

The way windows is installed ensures this level of robustness. I am still somewhat impressed...
