My shiny new computer, running Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit...

Z87-c motherboard
Intel i5 CPU
8 GB

I have been trying to install the following Asus motherboard software on this computer, but keep getting a 'Remote Procedure Call' failure when running the Asus installer for the programmes.

Software is:

AISuite_III_Win7-8_8-1_Z87-A_Z87-C

MEI_Win8-1_VER95101658

Windows Event Viewer says there was a problem with setup.exe_InstallShield and IKernel.exe.

Anyone have any suggestions on what the cause might be, and/or how to fix it so I can install these two programmes?

The computer is running fine without them, but they may be useful when installed/running.

I have logged a fault report with Asus...

Your solution starts with uninstalling Windows 8 and installing Windows 7.

I'm not very familiar with the ASUS software. Are you sure it is Windows 8 compatible?

Run full couple of passes of memtest86+. Sounds like failing memory. Easy to miss on a new build.

Yes. The two packages allow you to access the motherboard hardware/Bios/Fans, etc and make changes to them from Windows, and they are compatible with Windows 8.1 32 & 64 bit versions.

BTW Why would I want to revert back to an old version of Windows?

Memtest 86+ is a memory testing application that will analyze your memory and tell you if it finds any errors.  If there are, you have a faulty product.

You can find it at the link below.  I suggest downloading the ultimate boot CD, which contains Memtest 86+ and a lot of other helpful tools you may end up needing later on.  Great learning tool too. :)

Windows 8 is a tablet OS with a silly UI, buttons that are sometimes there and sometimes not...I'll wait for Windows 9.  History tells me that Windows 9 is going to be one cracker of an operating system ;)

I know what Memtest86 is. (used it in the past)

Other software installs haven't caused the error, so I'm pretty sure it's not a 'bad memory' problem.
I reinstalled pretty much everything from the old computer this one is replacing.

Just run three passes of Memtest86, no errors reported.

As to Windows 8, we'll have to agree to disagree...

When you get the error, do you get an error number along with the RPC error message?

That number carries more info on the actual RPC failure.

No. The RPC Failure is from the Asus installer programme, all it says is RPC Failure several times, then completes saying reboot to complete the install. After a reboot nothing happens.

Tried running the Asus installer under Total Uninstall to see what happens/changes are made, and from what I can see all the installer does is copy the unzipped set up folders and files to the Windows 8.1 ProgramData folder on C:\

I'm picking that it set's up a installer to run after the reboot, but that isn't working because of the RPC errors.

Windows Event Viewer isn't much help, as it says set up_installsheild and iKernel.exe failed. Nothing about RPC failures.

Ran memtest86 overnight, no errors reported.

Has ASUS gotten back to you yet? Are you using the software bundled on the CD that came with the board or did you get the updated versions off the internet? If not, you may want to download the software from the ASUS website instead.

I tried the DVD software first, when that didn't work, went to the Asus website and downloaded the two packages from there.  Same Remote Procedure Call error.

I dont expect to hear from Asus until tomorrow or Tuesday as I sent the support request on Friday night. (if I do at all)

Problem resolved/fixed.

It appears the upgrade from 8.1 32bit to 64bit wasn't 'perfect'.

Did a refresh install, and the software was installed without problem. Now I can try over-clocking from in Windows...

Thanks for all the suggestions and help.
