Recently rebuilt a PC box with new power supply and SATA hard drive etc.  Unit has an IDE DVD drive too.

Since SATA drives do not have jumpers, what is the setting for the DVD drive? Viz. master or slave?

The BIOS shows both drives as IDE (Channel 0 slave for the DVD, and Channel 2 master for the HD ... and is set for it to boot from the HD.

The machine boots correctly everytime PROVIDED the mains power is not turned off, because then it will stall at "detecting IDE drives" stage. However, a reboot will fireup the O/S as usual.

sounds like the SATA operation mode is set to IDE. perhaps see what happens if you set it to AHCI

There is a reg key to change which should allow you to make the change to AHCI after installing Windows.

depending on your drivers windows should be able to figure it out on its own, but yes the registry setting does work if not.

If you have Sata drives the DVD drive would be IDE master.

Thanks, it seemed to work ... drive in BIOS defaulted to Master.

I think that is for Win7 and above ... WinXP on this particular machine.

Yup.
