I tend to find that firefox just freezes whenever a video needs flash. I've found with youtube at least that I can set a preference to use HTML5 and this works much better.

But what about things like stuff, tvnz or any of these sites. They always try forcing flash on me again. And yet if I browse with an ipad I get video sans flash. How can I tell these sites - you know what I don't have flash give me something else?

I'd rather access less sites than put up with flash freezing my entire installation until the crash it.

I'm on Windows, I've tried chrome and while it's pretty I wouldn't want to use it as my daily driver, there are things i'm used to in Firefox that I just prefer (tabs on the bottom, background tab loading etc). I would look at a firefox plugin to send a link to chrome however.

can't understand why Flash would be crashing on you so much. It does from time to time for most people but should be stable enough to be used.
Try disabling hardware acceleration in Flash preferences to see if that makes it more stable.

Or you could try shumway as an alternative to flash - but there are a lot of sites it wont work on (yet)

Also make sure you haven't got two versions of Flash installed, that causes a lot of issues.

If by crashing you mean freezing? Sometimes it's ok. But quite often it just stalls and I get script taking too long errors.

I find the issue of YouTube, tvnz, stuff, mashable.

I've managed to force YouTube to html5 at least. And by using user agents I'll try the others

Couple of things, I'm not sure if you've tried this...if you can get into flash properties by right clicking on a flash object (doesn't need to be on a problem site, maybe just a flash ad on stuff)

Try and disable hardware acceleration.

Otherwise if your CPU is too weak to handle that, update your graphics drivers. Both nvidia a& amd drivers can have issues with flash (certain version/hardware combinations).

I wonder if you changed your browser agent to something like mobile safari then you might get the h264 embedded content instead of flash.

Probably 32.  I'd have to check

What video card do you have? Is the driver up to date? What version of Flash, is it up to date?

Hubby was having this problem on a new Win 7 install on some older hardware (update fron Win XP) so I updated his sound drivers which apparently can cause it, disabled hardware acceleration and added a line to some system file (can't remember where but I kept an original copy so can look it up for you later) and one of those did the trick as he's had no issues since.

Also, using the about:crashes report can be useful to help troubleshoot

In the address bar, type about:crashes and press Enter. A list of links to your crash reports will appear.

Oh here it is, disabled protected mode. That was the third thing.

I'll be changing that one back again today to see if Flash continues to work with protected mode turned back on.

Flash uses the GPU/video card to do hardware accelerated decoding, if it has to do software decoding it needs to use way more cpu power.

You can probably find out what video card you have with Speccy:

Ideally you don't want to have to disable either of those, good to try updating drivers first... with that as a last resort.

Yes, I'll be turning those back on again tomorrow one at a time; didn't get to it today.
