Hello can someone please recommend good free software there I can convert MKV files to either AVI or MP4. I did try VLC player but the video was jumpy but wasn't sure which settings to adjust etc.

Handbrake will be able to convert to mp4 from mkv.

Freemake video converter, pretty good, pretty fast, and can do anything.

You want to be re-muxing, not encoding.

Re-muxing an H.264 MKV takes the video stream and puts it inside an MP4 container, that way you won't get any quality loss.

Unless of course you want to decrease file size etc, then you have to re-encode.

I use mp4tools for mac, takes less than a minute.

Handbrake if you want MP4/M4V. It works well and it is fast.
