jeffnz: Thanks guys, Gozer that makes sense and I like the clean install however when I go to download ISO the product key number on side of computer is for 'pre installed' so it won't let me. I guess my options are to go to HP/MS and see if I can get disks or buy a key which seems silly since I have software already but long term is handy I guess

Have you tried Magic Jelly Bean to see if your key is the same as is on the PC?

From someone whos SSD committed suicide last night, when you get an SSD there are a number of articles on the internet on how to set them up.

I followed best practice when i initually set it up and moved the user folders to a standard spindle drive including photos music documents etc. Basically just leaving the SSD for the OS and software instalation files. In this case this has saved me, I recommend you do the same.

FYI Our PC is my wife's machine and the house file server, I generally don't use it but had been told it was blue screening over the last few days so after work yesterday I happened to be on the PC cleaning up a few files and watching youtube when bam blue screen but the memory dump was locked up ?? Rebooting the computer displayed non OS error message and after entering the BIOS all the drives were visible except the SSD, it's gone.

From reading on the net and from practical experience now when an SSD goes it seems to be catastrophic rather than the older spindle driveS where you get bad sectors etc. that gives you more grace time to slide a replacment drive in oh well I Now look forward to rebuilding that machine with Windows 8 and installing software ☺ at least the photos etc are safe.

This may already be solved .... cant be bothered reading through the 3 pages of replies.

I buy A-Data SSD's because the drive comes with a serial number for some cloning software you can download from ADATA's website.

You just put the drive into a usb<>sata enclosure or bridge ($20 on trademe) or connect it direct to the motherboard secondary sata ports.
Then boot up the computer into windows, install the software and it will clone the C: drive to the SSD.
Shut down again, and boot up off the SSD and you can then format your old C: (now D/E/F drive) once you have confirmed you didnt accidentally boot off it.

Pretty much all of them have free "migration" software that can do a clone inside windows in this way... Samsung SSD Magician, Intel SSD Toolbox / Data Migration etc

Alternatively Macrium Reflect Free is great for this too.

thanks forhelp guys, I got frustrated trying to restore system so I got clean installation so just used the software provided to clone. Booted up to password screen in 48 seconds and then into sytem in about 15 seconds so very pleased with that.

I have disconnected the old HDD as I need an IDE to Sata connector but in no hurry as I have a 2tb external which I'm using.
