kiwis: ...  price isnt a factor if its going to make a difference for fsx. performance isnt and issue today for other tasks and i do little other gaming

Then just buy (or build) a new gaming PC - don't waste time and money on an old dying PC.  wink

A CPU, motherboard and RAM combo ludez is selling. It's a decent upgrade from your current CPU, but still a few years old now. It's quite a popular CPU for overclocking.

FSX as noted above doesn't support multithreading, so you want something that does single threading well. That pretty much rules out any current generation AMD right there, and changes the recommendations for which intel CPU's suit your needs over most people who want a gaming PC.
Budget option: Pentium G3258 ($100), has damn fine single threaded performance for its price and amazing overclockability. Dubbed "the miracle chip" by some.
Midrange option: Core i5-4960 ($330). Excellent i5, only slightly more expensive than the 4590($299) which it handily thrashes in single threaded applications. A bit overkill, but the lower end i5's dont have the single thread performance.
High option: You really don't need a high end option for the usage you've outlined. . If you really want a bit if extra omph go to a 4960K ($350), or if you've won lotto a 4790K($500)

All the CPU's I've listed are current generation Intel Socket 1150 CPU's, so it's really just a matter of picking a brand, formfactor and feature set you want in a motherboard. ITX is really in lately, but I'm a full sized ATX kinda guy myself.
I'd probably go with a nice entry-level Asus board like the H97-Pro ($199)

RAM anything brand name with a lifetime warranty is fine for your needs, even Kingston Value, but if you pick one of the CPU's suitable for overclocking you probably want something a bit nicer.

All prices I quoted are from Computer Lounge, you may well find something cheaper hunting on PriceSpy but CL is widely considered the best computer parts store in NZ, and very few people ever had a bad experience with them.

The 4790K is the only one that's stock 4ghz plus. But it really is still massive overkill for stock FSX.. If your using fancy after-market add-ons/texture packs/etc well then maybe it's more suitable.

The motherboard I linked should be fine if your not over-clocking and sticking to a single GPU, and don't need any other fancy features.

Ive got a G3258 system, and its handling games marked as "quad core only" reasonably well for what it is :)    http://www.xpd.co.nz/?p=421

Depending on your existing components and if youre happy to build yourself, you could be up and running on a more modern system for around $400. (CPU, RAM, Motherboard)

Video cards are the big expense with systems these days, so if your current card is getting on in age, then expect to shell out a reasonable amount for a new one....

You really really really do no want any current gen AMD rig for a single threaded application.

To put it into perspective, the $99 budget intel CPU above performs noticeably better than that AMD chip in single threaded applications (e.g. FSX)

Thanks but I think my output is better than that.

I've seen good screen shots from this system

AMD FTX 6300 six core processor 3.5 GHz,
Video card Nvidia Geforce GTX 750 Ti 2 GB on board,
Windows 8.1 64 bit and 1 TB on hard drive.

is this the graphics card?
