So I thought this might not be easy but I thought it would be possible.

 

I have quite a lot off messages (in folders), 2gb which is more than my email provider will allow.

 

I cannot find any guides that actually work, there seems to be lots of versions of mbox and elmx that dont work as expected.

 

often in thread people mention using various paid for programs, but its always one person with very little information, and its hard to tell how legit any of these apps are.

 

I do have office 2011 mac installed too but that doesn't seem to help.

 

 

 

Short of setting up an Imap account and copying the folders this way, does it really have to be this hard?

So are you using a mail server that supports IMAP? That could be a way to move mail from Mail app (Apple Mail) to Outlook 2013. Both support IMAP, so you could copy your email from your local mail folders to the IMAP server on Mail app, and then (if you are connected via IMAP in Outlook) you should see them in Outlook as well.

 

Apple Mail uses mbox (pretty standard) to store emails. So you might want to Google "mbox to pst" and see if you find any help there. But I have a feeling its going to be a world of hurt to move it from Mail app on OS-X to Outlook 2013 on Windows if you try grabbing it that way.
