Does anyone know how to share the actual win 10 Desktop - when it won't ?  I set it to Share with everyone and give RW access but it doesn't work.

I'm a bit confused with Win10 Desktop which seems to be 'different' when comparing what's on it and what's in the Folder in Explorer (or which there seems to be more than one).  I lost c:\Windows\Users\Win7 which had a lot of Desktop files (but not all). That was shared and I'd like to get back  the capability to copy files to/from it over the LAN.  (My Win 10 which was that free upgrade from Win7.)

And one more problem, the windows logo bottom LH side used to do stuff, now it does nothing.

 For sharing.

  1. Open the Windows Settings App
  2. Click on Network & Internet
  3. Click on Ethernet
  4. Make sure sure this is enabled as this sets your current network as private one.
5. Click on Change advanced sharing options.
  6. Expand the All Networks section
  7. Make sure to turn off password-protected sharing. This stops people being asked to login to access the share.
  8. Then click Save Changes.

For the start menu try right clicking on the windows icon or using WIN + X keys until your computer is running the latest windows 10. Otherwise you will have to use Windows 10 Reset feature / reinstall.

Thanks for the very nice reply.  I was able to follow through  and confirm all the settings.

I must have something else wrong...  digging deeper...

Cheers :)

I've narrowed the problem down a bit, but not sure how to fix it.

File sharing is working, but including the Desktop is the issue. In win10 explorer it shows as a Blue Icon, not a yellow folder and the sharing method doesn't seem to work.  I cannot get it to appear in ThisPC\Network\Win10-pc\ along with some other folders that are shared. It used to be there though.

I have managed to get the full "User" path shared but this means the desktop is several folders deep and can no longer be mapped to a drive letter.

Any solution much appreciated.

You can share just the desktop folder by doing to following

  1. In File Explorer Navigate to C:\Users\(your username)
  2. Right Clicking Desktop
  3. Selecting Properties
  4. Select Sharing
  5. Select Advanced Sharing
  6. Click Share this folder. Then click OK.

Wow...  spot on... 100%  I had spent most of the afternoon with MS Chat being lead up the garden path and being told all the reasons why this was impossible, even though it was how it used to be.

My problems began with a Windows Update that suddenly wanted Username/Password for the LAN. To get rid of that (2 days later) was "Go Back to Previous Build".  But it left me with no space on C:.

To free up room I asked MS if I still needed C:\Users\Win7  (as I'd upgraded to Win 10).  They said it was OK to delete it so I did - and permenantly as I figured putting it in the recycle bin wouldn't save any space. But as I found out later \Win7 was my user account.

So I lost a few weeks work I had on the Desktop and a couple more days getting it all back how it was. Now thanks to you laughing. it's almost the same except for needing User/Pass at switch on which is new. And I'm now User "Temp".

I see my mistake here was going 'Desktop/Share' with instead of 'Desktop/Properties/Sharing'.

Thanks a mill you saved the day !!

I wonder if you have a solution for this while copying a file to the mapped desktop?

Sometimes the file icon doesn't appear on the WIn10 Desktop.  If I search for it, it's name and location as the Desktop appear in the results list.

If I copy that file to the desktop, it's icon appears, having added "- Copy" to the filename. Then searching for the original file again shows two file in the same location - but the original has no icon.
