Hi I've used laptops for a decade and I adjust the screen brightness with ease.

With a desktop, there is no easy way to adjust brightness on my Philips monitor - it's got fiddly unlit touch switches and surfing onto the brightness bit is very difficult.

So I was thinking software - any ways to browse without glaring white backgrounds at night? What about other bright things like Windows Explorer - do people change to a different non white background?

Coloured web pages seem to be ok, but big white spaces are like "WHOA I need sunglasses"

And that's with all the lights on in my room, no I'm not using it in an otherwise pitch black room.

Involuntary autocorrect in operation on mobile device. Apologies in advance.

There is something called DDC protocol with provision for backlight control.

As usual implemented or correctly implemented by the monitor manufacturer varies.

This app mentions DDC http://clickmonitorddc.bplaced.net and there are others.
