I have an 8.1 machine not used since December.

For some reason it stays on windows update forever.

Tried to install the march rollup. Same result, searching for updates on this computer forever. Windows update troubleshooter fails. Is there a surefire fix for these issues?

1. Upgrade to Windows 10?

2. Delete software distribution folder in Windows after stopping windows update service.

Well i sorted that one using the advice above eventually. I had tried the fix-it earlier. As i said initially, same problem with the march update. Also deleted the update database and log. That was silly because killed my update history. Still no update.

After that restored the update dB and log, but history is gone. But the march update now installs. Installed the other two and now windows update is working again. Success!

Anyway one of those dumb things you do to your own computer. Somewhat horrible.and probably just windows update overloaded with wcry yesterday. Double doh. I'll refesh it asap.

Windows update is a piece of sh!t at the best of times.
Try doing a fresh install of win7 - it won't update. You have to update the updater with lots of jiggery poker, or just use the above.
It will install updates where windows won't. And with luck afterwards win update may work again.

not as bad as it was, from what Ive seen.
used to be a nightmare on 7 re-installs for a while. Now, just manually install IE11 & winupdate then just works on Win7 reinstalls (so far)

IE11 being the key to get it working on 7 now.
