am i right to assume that if i re-orientate the wires of my usb1 connector to the usb2 format, i can connect it to the usb2 port headers in my m/b?

Well since USB1 and USB2 connectors are the same then yes.

I'm assuming you have a cable that used to plug onto a mother boards USB1 connector and you want to attach it to another motherboard that has USB2 ?  And I assume that motherboard A has a different pin header arrangement to Motherboard B ?

So long as you know which wires should go to Data+, Data-, +5V and GND and know where they are to go on the new motherboard you should be fine.

Mark

Careful, i know people who have plugged their front USB into the wrong pins, and as a result it completely stripped the wires, making a decent amount of smoke and killed the flash drive that was plugged in.
