Years ago, starting from around 2011, I made some backups with Acronis because I had a Seagate drive and that was pushed at me. It was also free for Seagate drive users.

 

I guess you get what you pay for. Now I would like to try to retrieve some of the data off my backup drive but I can’t get it to work. Acronis, which is a steaming pile of convoluted user-unfriendly excrement, keeps crashing my system in random ways. It seems to be going out of its way to prevent access to my data. Every time it looks about to read my drive, it suddenly does a cold reboot without any warning. Whatever I try, it finds a new way to fail. The software really is complete and utter crap. I am booting from both the installed version and a CD on a XP computer.

 

It is also anally proprietary. Nothing else will read the backed up files. I know there is no problem with the data drive because it works fine without Acronis. I just can’t read the damned files.

 

I moved on from this years ago and discovered a grown-up program that works with no silliness in Macrium Reflect, which also happens to be free but without all the ridiculous nonsense that goes with Acronis. Unfortunately, Macrium doesn’t solve my current problem.

 

So is there any way to actually get data out of those .tib files, preferably one that doesn’t involve Acronis. It really is a piece of crap as far as I can see.

I believe if you have a version of Acronis installed you can mount the *.tib file as a drive and browse and copy out the data your after. 

 

if you don't have a copy you may have to go for a sail in the bay.

I do have it installed. It keeps crashing my system. That is my complaint. I am trying to read it with the same software that installed it.

Create a Acronis boot CD and recover the files that way.

 

I use Acronis a lot and have not had any issues like you have.

Never had issues with Acronis, I haven't used it for years but always found it vastly superior to Ghost.

I have Acronis installed on the hard drive. I also have an Acronis boot CD. Both give different errors, but the result is a sudden system shut-down. I can't get anything to work long enough to actually read the drive. I have some other ideas I am going to try tomorrow. I thought someone here might have a suggestion.

I use acronis all the time at work, i do about 6-8 backups a month and depending on how well the computers play the game, i may have to do one restore every 3-4 months, if im unlucky.

 

 

 

never had any issues you describe, i plug the backup external hard drive in, check its registered in windows, put in the acronis DVD, reboot the computer, it boots into acronis, then i either backup or restore. i take a complete image of C and D drives and never had it fail.

 

Try copying your data off your drive onto a different one, it could be your drive thats the issue.

You don't mention if you are using your original 2011 version of Across or a newer one

You can download a 30 day fully functional trial from their website if you haven't already

Also it may be an issue with something on your PC,.Perhaps try another one if you can

As other's have said, I'd also say that the backup file has been damaged which causes an unexpected error/exception that is crashing Acronis. So try copying the backup file and then check the file and disk.

 

Another option might be Seagate Disk Wizard which is a disk imaging version of Acronis. If you have imaged a drive then maybe you could try that to restore the entire image to an empty drive.

P.S. Your problem is better described without the unnecessary superlatives and cursing. Acronis has been free at various times for other than Seagate users so it has been very widely used.

 

I have always found it to be reliable and generally easier to use than Macrium Reflect which is the main backup product I have used for most of two decades.

That is one of the things I'm going to try tomorrow. I had the same thought. It is odd, though. The drive is the one I made the back-ups directly to.

Sometimes I wonder about that as well, but I think anyone who plays around with this kind of stuff probably runs into the same kinds of things from time to time.

that means nothing the drive could have errors on it. does the computer boot into acronis with out the dive plugged in? ie from the bootable CD/DVD?

This is a good point and I try not to go overboard but I had problems with Acronis (the Seagate version) from the beginning and the unnecessary superlatives are a reaction to that. For me, Macrium Reflect was like a breath of fresh air in comparison. But at the time, Acronis was what I had available and that is what I used. I was usually able to get it to work correctly eventually, but it was always a bit of a hassle. Now I just want to get my data back that I entrusted to it. The cursing is just venting. It shouldn't be this hard. If copying to another drive or using another computer works tomorrow I will let everyone know.
