Got asked today for advice on a laptop from Asus.

Its a brand new model (3 months old if that), top dollar price tag.

Initially it looks good, but then I noticed the CPU is an 8th gen processor (i7) and it has DDR3 RAM (surface mounted).

While for a general use laptop its fine, Id expect for the $$$ involved ($2k+) it'd have a newer CPU and RAM in it - or am I missing something ?

It does have some gimicky screen thats also used as a touchpad from what i can tell.......

The geek in me says "run away" :)

There's probably no practical gain moving up one generation of CPU / RAM family.

I think you'll find it's onboard LPDDR3 as it is designed to be a 2-in-1 / mobile device. Who knows whether the CPU is downclocked/throttled also? If you want DDR4 then look for a 'full' laptop.

Laptops still come with DDR3 as it uses less power. And even now even the latest gen units will still ship with it.

Not saying this is every device but expect to see it frequently.

Other way round.... :)   DDR4 is lower voltage than DDR3, DDR3 lower than DDR2 etc.  Lower VDIMM was one of the original selling points & aimed at servers.

@xpd  sounds like Noel Leeming are having a sale? Or Harvey Norman.  :P
