Finally had a decent look at monitor connected to laptop,

In the dark and with a torch, has a "halo" back light, turns on is detecting laptop and laptop detecting monitor, no image looking with torch and no OSD.

Not being a expert, I presume the "halo" light is the back light, according to Google it could be something fried on the circuit board.

So into the retailer tomorrow then...

Took monitor in to retailer, they were quite good about it,

so will be sent away to Auckland but due to being one month out of warranty it's up to LG to do the right thing and fix/replace it,

I did mention the CGA, so I will see what happens...

To the best of my understanding, the retailer and the importer are both liable under sections of the CGA, so if the store are claiming it's only up to LG they are being rather disingenuous. LG may (and probably will) repair/replace it without a fuss, but if they didn't, you'd have a perfectly valid CGA claim against the retailer.

good outcome.

In many ways CGA can be awkward, but any reasonable person or friend of yours would expect a monitor to last 3 years. Good on PBTech for supporting you
