Im getting a nrew computer soon _ havnt decided which yet, but have a techie friend to look at it before i get one.

SSD, and intel quad-4. Im not into gaming or anything - but just need reasonably fast.

Ps - where do i go to say - "yes, i have a 2nd screen connected with HDMI cable" (or other connection type).

Agree that this is something important to consider with laptops. I didn't fully, and now have an Asus laptop that doesn't do display out via USB-C (via a USB-C docking station). We have laptops at work that do this, and made the mistake of making assumptions about certain functions "just working".

I'd suggest reaching out locally for some 1:1 technical help (that isn't a storefront salesman) if changing system totally vs upgrading. As you appear to have some hard limiting options to consider that may not be straight up noticed if you are not familiar with the systems and current connectivity measures based on that thread.

As you are currently on an AIO (all-in-one) + ext monitor - this is not going to be the same experience on a laptop or standalone PC. While another AIO may put you straight back in the slow boat.

Changing to a laptop would give you another screen (total:2 like now). With the limitation of screensize onboard, and resolution needs to be considered if small text is an issue. AIOs are automatically a 23/24". When a laptop may only be 15". CPUs can equally be limited to keep heat and costs down to meet price points.

A new standalone PC would not meet current layout. And likely need a 2nd monitor purchase (total:2) - With Advantages of some upgradability/changes in components vs a laptop. And often more range in CPUs as heat is less a factor

Your current +1/additional screen may have limited inputs. Which can effect your choice of Laptop/PC also. Laptops may have HDMI, USB-C, Mini Display port, Displayport. on their own, Or sometimes a combination.

Your monitor, may be limited to only 1, or all of these. Depending on age. And a PC may ship with only DisplayPort/VGA - optionally HDMI.

Unfortunately, there is no 1 rule to rule them all.

As pointed out in the thread where you were tracking down what you had, if you have some pictures of the undersides of your current monitor, or at least the model from the menu, it will help answer what connections you are limited to and help with decisions. You'll need a 'shopping list' if the requirement is to marry a new device to existing stuff as it stands now.
