Would I need a new PSU for this setup, or would my existing one do the job?

Edit: just checked and apparently it's a "Cooler Master MWE Bronze 450".

Presuming that the "450" means 450 watts, that should be fine.  Newer hardware usually uses less power, but you are increasing the RAM which offsets that.  However, it is likely that the existing system is operating way below 450 watts anyway.  As an example, my MythTV box with 6 hard drives, two 8 tuner PCIe cards, an Nvidia GT 1030, and 8 Gibytes of RAM typically draws around 120 W when playing recorded TV programs for me (as reported by its Corsair RM650i power supply).  The only reason it has such a big power supply is that I wanted a modular one (plugable cables) and high efficiency (80 Plus Gold certified), both of which were not available in 500 watt or smaller power supplies at the time.  Here is what it reports at the moment (it is pretty much idle):

root@mypvr:~# OpenCorsairLink --device 0
Dev=0, CorsairLink Device Found: RM650i!

That sounds right, it looks like one of these:
https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/PSUCLM1451/Cooler-Master-MWE-450W-230V-80Plus-Bronze-PSU-MEPS

So if you think that's suitable, I'll just move it to my new case then ๐Ÿ‘

I can not see anything wrong with that power supply except that it is very cheap, so will likely have a shorter lifetime.  But at that price, you can just buy another if it fails a little early.

I'm now actually toying with the idea of giving my current machine to my mother (who has no desktop PC) and getting full brand new unit for me - which means I'd need a new motherboard, as well as a new optical drive.

What's the best these days? I used to really like Gigabyte motherboards but are they still good? Having said that I think my current one is an Asus.

Optical drive? You mean the cup holder I used to have a decade ago?

Gigabyte motherboards have been reliable for me. Make sure you try to go for RAM compatible with the motherboard you purchase.

Yes an optical drive, my mother still listens to CDs a lot.

I'll run what I'd like to do past PB Tech and see what they say.

Thread bump - AMD Ryzen 7 5600G: this CPU doesn't appear to be available anymore; can someone (@toejam316 ?) suggest a replacement?

Edit: I might update the BIOS myself before doing the upgrade as well, can't hurt and would save them a job.

Oh true, I was just going on the info that toejam provided. I'd prefer to get it all from PBTech to be honest, that way they can assemble it at the same time as well.

In anticipation of upgrading my machine, I've used a little bit of the refund on my credit card (see the airport parking thread) and have ordered a new case.

My BIOS version is quite old - version 3. I found out you can't just upgrade from 3 > 7, it seems you have to go in steps. I've upgraded to 3.40 successfully, and have installed/updated the AMD Radeon Software + drivers, but a little stuck on where to next: do I now move to version 5.5? There's no clear pathway listed here:
