I used LTO2 tapes back in 2011/2012 to backup a whole lot of personal data, mainly all DVD ISO's when I transferred all the family videos from VHS to DVD - around 500GB, and then later in 2018 added to that with copies of 8mm films we had scanned frame by frame to raw TIFF files - totaling up to nearly 3TB.

Recently ran into an issue where my LTO2 tape drive decided to give up - mechanical failure - so I then had to try and source a new one which proved to be quite difficult given its LTO2, even trying to get an LTO3 or 4 at reasonable price second hand proved to be a pain and expensive.  One second hand purchase from trademe was DOA and had to get a refund.  In the end I ended up getting a second hand LTO2 drive from a customer through work, it has been stored in their air conditioned server room for the past 10 years and was in very good cond and I was able to read my tapes.

LTO tapes are great for long term archival storage, however tape drives don't last forever - and when LTO versions advance it get's a lot more difficult to find tape hardware to read the older LTO versions.  For now i'm keeping a copy on tape and multiple hard drives in different physical locations.
