I have a phillips monitor at work and the sound is 1000x better than the viewsonic ones i've heard. anyone knows the above monitor has an okay (as opposed to horrible) sound? esp if you have compared both before!

err.. i wouldn't recommend any monitor's built in speakers - i always recommend a stereo/hifi that can deliver much better sound. aren't they like 3w speakers or something?

yeah but my work phillips sounds as good as my vaio laptop. viewsonic HURTS my ears at any volume. dont know why. my ears are ringing anyway - dont know why too.

i dont use the pc for gaming or music or anything soundy or video-y.

i am trying to minimise the wires - oh the wires! monitor cable usb cable power cables LAN cables phone cables another phone cable for VOIP voip cable drives me mad! at least will get rid of the 5.1 setup with 10 metres+ of cabling arrgh!

at this point i am jealous of the mac owners (the one with no cables)

yeah i hate the cables mess too.. but at times i put up with it to get descent sound quality.. i do the exact same with our Bravia set.. never used the TV's speakers since we've had it.. almost 2 years now. Exactly because we run all the sound through the Home Theater instead.. 7.2 rules :)

I've never really heard any decent sound coming out of the speakers on monitors - although Philips speakers that I've heard are good for the odd squeak.

If your ears are ringing, then you should go get your ears checked - there are free clinics that will test and make sure there's nothing serious going on - google hearing test for your area (or call your local GP - they may know)

You could go get a set of USB powered speakers - some of them include a volume control on the units now I see, but then you only have two cables - one to the USB port and one to the second speaker.

In terms of cable mess, have you considered putting in conduits? That can help immensely (I have large hooks and cable tidy's on the back of my desk, all the cables are routed through those - one set for power and one for data cables)

i used to celotape them to reduce clutter. but when i want to change something everything is stuck and had to undo them - and didnt re-tape

There are velcro strips you can get for the same thing.

If you are using cellotape, then cut a piece of tape a little longer than twice the length you need, and then double the tape over onto itself (sticky side to sticky side), leaving a little bit of the sticky side exposed. Then you can wrap the cellotape around the wires, and use the still exposed portion to stick back down onto the tape.

Helps to avoid having the stickiness get on the wires and easier to remove. It's also a reusable solution.
