hi guys,

im looking at buying this

http://www.computerlounge.co.nz/components/componentview.asp?partid=14944

and was wondering if anyone had any experience with it (or similar model).  basically i want to know
1. how does the 'orb transcoding' work?  Will it automatically transcode any mkv/avi/mov etc to a file the device i want to play it on can handle? eg my LG tv with DLNA, my xbox 360, my apple tv?  Does it have enough power to transcode a 1080p MKV to a 720p file for an apple tv?
2. is the QNAP better?
3. are there issues about this device i should know about?

TIA

I've just installed a QnAP TS-559 pro and about to install a QNAP TS-659 Pro+ (they were around $1400 for the 6 bay from memory). it's pretty good so far. TBH they are probably about the same as the Netgear in terms of quality/features.

You could research this further on the Readynas Forums at http://www.readynas.com/forum if you haven't already.

The Ultra's run Intel CPU's so you shouldn't have any issues with performance. Just make sure you select drives off their HCL. This will avoid compatibility issues and ensure you get support from Netgear.
