We've just done a Google search on two computers both running XP using Google Chrome browser in one computer and Opera and Google Chrome on the other.  On the first computer the site we were looking for came up on the first page of Google results on the second computer the site showed up on page 6 on both Chrome and Opera.

How weird is that?  Both computers are using the same broadband connection as well?

Can anyone offer an explanation?

Thanks

Thanks, I was suspected as much.  It makes it hard to measure the effectiveness of any SEO you're doing.

Open up an incognito or private tab, then perform the search. Results should be more on par with each other then.

In addition, I get the impression results are partly weighted for your geographic area (in addition to .co.nz or .com) This could mean you would need a vpn to see how you are ranking in other states.

Not at all sure about that, maybe someone who knows will confirm or otherwise.

Yep, location matters, but this can be changed easily via the "Change location" link on the left-hand column.

Not sure if google.com and google.co.nz would provide different results if you had your location set the same.

So many variables!
