Finch: What phone are you all upgrading from to get the Lumia 920? :)

Lumia 800, which I have been 100% happy with apart from the faulty compass and 2 bad service experiences. I'd even prefer if the 920 had a smaller screen, but what the hell.

I wasn't counting on getting a 920 until some time next year, but when I read it was showing up at Telecom already whilst being sold out pretty much everywhere overseas, I couldn't resist.

Not sure of the details or availability but Expert Infotech indicate they have the Nokia Lumia 920 in stock. [24-NOV-2012 23:10]

Nokia Lumia 920 at Expert Infotech Ltd

At the current price point you'd have to take a deep breath, but it is a very fine looking phone.

Wow, that's a damn good deal right there.

PS: anybody watched some of the drop\destruction tests on the 920.  Geez they are tough phones! Surprised

First take after a night messing with the 920...
  • Spotify can finally take their crappy app and die.. Xbox music pass is all I need
  • The camera performance in a dim room is jaw-dropping.
  • I'm using it with my Vodafone sim.. works fine.
  • I have Windows 8 on my desktop, and am using the dedicated app for accessing the phone.. looks nice, seems to work.. always hated Zune, because it couldn't cope with my collection.
  • Some apps are oddly missing from the store.. e.g. Tune-in.
  • Coming from an HD2, to a Lumia 800, then to this, the 920 would be much handier if it were a little smaller. The 800 was a real one-handed device.. the 920 is not.
  • The screen colours and contrast are way snappier on the Lumia 800 AMOLED screen, but the 920 is more accurate and it's not too noticeable when they aren't compared alongside each other.
  • The screen is always bright enough, it just lacks the AMOLED contrast.
  • The text in the day boxes in the calendar is legible with a magnifier, but otherwise the 800 already was plenty sharp for typical use. The ppi on this is for the spec wars.
  • Definitely don't like the USB cable out the bottom and the headset out the top.. was much more convenient for my purposes with both next to each other on top, as on the Lumia 800.
  • The weight is not a problem and adds to the very high quality feel of the phone.
  • I don't think the new start screen tiles are as clean a UI as the old dual-column on Mango.. the medium tiles are too big and the small ones too small, and the biggest ones are huge. But with some effort I can see it will still work well and it certainly fits more in. I think they should have optionally gone for 3 tiles across instead of 2.
  • Many 3rd party live tiles will need to be updated to work nicely at the 3 sizes... at the moment most just change from small to medium and show the same info in both.
  • Phone speed is fast as it always is on WP.
  • Battery.. cant' tell yet, but I'm betting it'll need an update from Nokia to fix a few related issues, same as with the 800.
  • The Telecom boot logo is just unbelievably ugly and oh so wrong for this phone. It looks like it belongs on a Galaxy S3. Thankfully there's no logo on the body.
  • Again... the phone exterior looks and feels great. Shame it doesn't come with the nice slim case the Lumia 800 had. I want to use it without a case, but don't want to mess it up either.
  • The Nokia EQ and Dolby options are hidden in the phone settings. They work well for different purposes and definitely improve weak headsets. I'm using the Monster Purity in-ear ones, which are great, but not much bass.. now they have bass.
  • One benefit I notice with the big screen is that certain apps that didn't work well on the small 800 screen now work well.
  • All the Nokia apps are improving.. Drive, Maps, Transit.. POIs are much better all of a sudden.
  • The compass actually works.. and hence City Lens also works.
  • There's no bloatware on the phone, which is nice to see
  • And Telecom sent it on overnight courier, which was also nice after the instore debacle.
  • The phone slips out of my hands much more easily than the 800 and that's a worry.
That's all so far
Rob

Thanks for those thoughts Rob, interesting to note.

Has anyone with a 920 experienced either of these issues:

1) Significant inaccuracy in Nokia lens.. partners is showing a 90 degree+ offset. When asked to calibrate it doesn't seem to help that much?
2) The times shown on SMS messages appear to be out by various lengths of time. It looks to be some sort of timezone related issue (I've noticed a 13 hour offset) but I've confirmed that the timezone is set to NZ time in all places. Have found a few mentions of this with WP7 online but nothing too helpful. Carrier is Telecom FYI.

Any thoughts on the above?

Having not used WP7/8 before, it does seem like a very fluid device but somewhat lacking in options and a few minor features (no per-contact SMS tones, can't lock the device in portrait mode to name two). I'm still not quite sold on the platform despite being pretty excited for it a while back.

City Lens works on the 920. The Lumia 800 has the 90 degrees off problem. The points of interest are also much more recent and accurate than before, so I'll definitely use it now.

I'll keep an eye on SMS times and report back. I'm on Vodafone.

The US/Canada/UK get a free wireless charger along with the 920, and now the US are getting a free Purity Headset. And some retailers are doing special offers, like Walmart is giving a $70 gift card along with the 920.

It's making me very reluctant to get a 920 without some sort of special offer.

While that sort of thing might happen overseas, how often has it happened here for devices like mobile phones especially hot new releases like the Lumia 920?  I don't like your chances.

Your logic doesn't make sense to me.

My attitude is if I want something, I ask myself, does it do what I want, is the price reasonable compared to other similar products, can I afford it, then I make my decision.  I don't sit around waiting for enticements to buy that may never come.

One other thing to remember is that provided the device isn't a frivolous purchase, the sooner you buy it the sooner you get the advantage that ownership of that device brings and the longer you have it before it goes out of date or is superseded.

It doesn't normally happen overseas either. You don't get free headsets or charging pads with the GS3, or RAZR, or iPhone 5 or Nexus 4.

Saving money makes perfect sense to me. I suppose it's worth it to you if you put so much value in getting the phone a couple of weeks earlier than everyone else, or don't mind having a branded phone or didn't want any specific colour.

If Telecom don't throw in something else before Clove have the one I want in stock, I'll get it the way I want it (not black, not branded and slightly cheaper).

Now that you've qualified your statement I can see where you're coming from. You're looking for a sweetner to buy something that'd not quite what you want. Personally I go for what I want no matter what other deals are offered since I normally end up being disappointed with my second choice..

I'm all for saving money too, that's why I usually wait a while for the numbers being sold to slow down and the prices drop.

I had a play with one on the weekend. Really nice phone but a bit too large for my hands. :(

Something with the same specs but a smaller screen/size would be perfect for me.
