freitasm: Well, forget about this. Next phone for wife is going to be an iPhone. Removing Zune from my laptop. I hope to never have to hear about this piece of badly written software again.

Aww that's too bad.

I was just beginning to enjoy the constant stream of negative posts...

Btw. Just because there is 7.8, does not mean you "have to" upgrade and Apple iOS has their own issues in case you do not keep up with the news.

You are so right there and this is exactly what I have done for my wife. I like your new article that you have written about MS and their updates.

I think you are mistaking criticism with negativism.

http://www.zdnet.com/apple-iphone-and-ipad-ios-6-network-problems-linger-on-7000011133/

"Vodafone, the UK cellular carrier, is asking that its iPhone 4S users not upgrade to iOS 6.1 because of intermittent 3G performance and connectivity problems. At least one other phone company, Three Austria, is reported to be seeing the same problem and it's also asking its 4S customers not to upgrade to iOS 6.1."

I guess this is why there is a period of 'carrier testing' before updates are released, and perhaps maybe be a reason to stagger updates... imagine the load on call centers for carriers if a large percentage of user upgraded their phones and started having call quality problems.

I do agree that there should be an official 'geek bypass' though...

I know about those. Damn I spend the day reading about these things.

My suggestion was always to split updates in new user feature, fixes and network related stuff and release those separately.

It is ridiculous we have to wait six months for a cosmetic feature such as the SMS timestamp showing in the wrong timezone when it could be a simple patch released independently of the operator's whim.

I have enjoyed the update so far.

I do really like how the screen "feels" bigger with the removal of the black bar down the right hand side.

I didnt like how the update was pushed out though. I have a parallel imported Lumia 710 (T-Mobile) running on the 2Degrees network. Maybe next time Microsoft could include a "Your carrier hasn't approved the update yet, here are some warnings about why, but do you want to apply the update at your own risk?" button.

I havent had any issues with live tiles using excess battery either, however i keep my main page nicely laid out so all my icons are visible and i dont need to scroll down.

its nothing to do about the carrier per se, so 2Degrees don't approve or block it, its the OS image on the device you have

so if you used the Zune/pull out the Ethernet "hack" your phone would have got the update anyway

I'm not familiar whether Tmobile approved 7.8 for the 710 or not

So, what's the score with 2degrees and the 7.8 update?
I have a parallel imported Lumia 800 on 2Deg's and Zune constantly tells me I'm up to date.

I have a 900 and am in a similar situation. I assume I'll see the update notification soon enough but I think the Windows Phone roll out is a complete mess regardless.

if its not a phone you bought from 2degrees then its nothing to do with them.   What carrier is registered in  settings/about/phone carrier?

I've just gone and forcefully updated my unit.

Don't muck around with ethernet cables and such. Disable your network adapter, press the update button with your phone attached and wifi enabled. Wait 3 to 5 seconds after pushing "update" and enable flight mode. I found it less clumsy than ripping a cable out the back of a computer 10 times in a row.

Remember to re-enable the network adapter on the computer as Zune will reject the update if it can't find a connection and you are back to square one :)

Sometimes what you don't get is a blessing in disguise!

+1 for David's method, very easy, but it requires patience; mine had 3 updates to go through before 7.8
I'm liking these new tiles, but they should have been like that since the initial release, and we could have been enjoying better functionality with this update, like USSD code and the ability to filter contacts out if they don't have phone numbers etc.
