The only New Zealand operator to lock phones is Skinny. Any device you buy on Vodafone should work just fine on 2degrees.

Updates will be on a different schedule than the local ones, as the phone will be originally sold to another market. It may get it earlier, or later...

Local warranty and CGA, which you don't have when buying from overseas. And some manufacturers flat out refuse to service imported handsets (I don't know about Nokia).

Thanks Freitasm, your reply is most helpful.  As a user of both Lumia 920 and Ascend W1, do you have any comment about this:  Which is the best device for making voice calls -- the Lumia 920 or the Ascend W1?

I haven't used the W1 for phone calls really, only for mobile data. I actually don't use voice that much at all in any phone, as I rather have emails than a conversation (email tracking, etc).

Just to show good the HAAC mic's are on the Lumia 920, 720 etc. Below is a video from concert. The first 1 minute and 15 seconds are with Lumia 920 and then HTC 8X.

Yep, it's a pretty stark contrast, thanks BillGates.  The HTC is a distorted, garbled mess compared to the Lumia.

The Lumia 720 on expansys.co.nz for NZ$382 btw excludes GST and courier. Courier fees is NZ$26 which pushes the cost of the device to above NZ$400. This means that GST/Customs will be charged on this. Wait another week or so and the price should drop further on the device. When the cost of the device incl courier is below NZ$390 or NZ$385, then buy it as then you will incur a customs hit on the purchase.

Thanks for the warning.  I figured I might get hit for GST, but depending on what Vodafone will be selling them for, it may still be worth it.

Why do you expect the price to drop in a week?

I looked on Amazon, and the US$ price was $399, although I did see other places offering them for between US$345 and US$370.  Which still makes Expansys the best option.

I am also going to purchase couple of Lumia 720 for myself and wife. I first saw expansys.co.nz list the price at NZ$465 almost 2 weeks ago and nearly every couple of days, the prices on almost all Lumia range drops by $10 odd or so due to currency fluctuation? or better and cheaper pricingfrom Nokia? It's sitting at NZ$382 now. Even the likes of Lumia 620 started at NZ$330 and now it's sitting at NZ$270. Lumia 520 started at NZ$266 and now sitting at NZ$232.

btw. I have a trial unit of Lumia 520 at work from Gen-I and I am very impressed with it. I did not think of it much when I first saw few videos and the announcement. It feels really great in the hand. The IPS display on it is fantastic. The only thing negative about it which put me off from buying it is no flash in back for camera module. For $299 it's a steal. It's a better deal over the Ascend W1 considering you get the Nokia suite of apps for free which are well worth it.

Telecom has the Lumia 520 listed on their website in Yellow, Red or Black for NZ$299. Vodafone is selling the black model for NZ$299 and 2Degrees will also get the black colour sometime in May for NZ$299.

No NZ carrier has announced availability for Nokia Lumia 720. If they did, I'd rather buy local as well due to warranty support etc if the price is not too high compared to the parallel importers.

TheWarehouse is selling the Nokia Lumia 720 unlocked for NZ$499. They have the Yellow colour in stock and will also be getting the black colour by next week. Rang the local branch and they had 5 yellow in stock.

After reading this, my hopes began to soar, but checking TWL On-line, the 720 doesn't even feature Frown although the 520 is showing  as Telecom XT only  and "Image coming soon" with the price of $299 - but flagged as "Sold Out" already!

Good news - Picked up the Lumia 720 yellow from TheWarehouse for $399.20. Build quality is superb. It's very light and the display is fantastic.

Bad news - I only bought 1 unit instead of 2 for me and my wife. Wife said can't have 2 of the same colours in the house as they only had the yellow in stock. Wife said she wants yellow. So she has a Nokia Lumia 720 and I have nothing. I got nothing. Zero.

Now I have to wait for Red or any other colour to be available at some decent price.

Edit - btw thewarehouse Lumia 720 are Australian imports. Good news is that when I inserted my Telecom XT micro-sim in the phone, Nokia Here Drive provided me with the NZ license and I was able to download the map for NZ.

Damn. Someone told me that the 20% off sale is going for next 3~4 days. I am not 100% sure on this but you could check again if you are back in next couple of days.

You are a saviour!!Innocent

Went shopping tonight....with family...while the girls clothes shopped I phone shopped.  Checked TWL - they had the 720 (in Yellow only) at $499.

Checked out Digi Imports - they had the 820 at $538.  Hmmmmmm more perplexing...what to get....what to get????

Wandered into Vodafone.....looked at the 520....must say...very impressed, but it is a very basic model at $299.

Noel Leemings had the 620...but at $349...and a week or two (?) wait for delivery.

Had a play with the 820 at Digi Imports - in white....this is really nice!  Getting really keen here...for $38 more than TWL and getting a bit of a bonus with 4G.........

What a situation.....undecided....re-grouped with the women...they were still shopping for their gear.

Pop out...check this forum and see BillGates post re reduced price!!!

Steam back into TWL....tell them what I had read....shop assistant (who had zilch knowledge of any of the products except her own phone "that is like great you know....like great for txting and like stuff on") makes a call...then comes back and tells me that they will honour the discount offered.  Nobody had told her about it (apparently) Which doesn't say a lot about their staff communication.

So.......away I came...at the awesome price of $399.20....with a yellow creation of beauty Smile  Smile  Cool

Now....just have to obtain the micro SIM card.  Can't wait!
The phone looks a million dollars, feels nice, awesome display.  Couldn't have been happier.

Thanks Bill Gates!! (and GeekZone)
