I have just updated my phone's firmware. Wow, the difference is amazing. The camera speed is unbelievable and so is the multimedia menu speed. I am very glad that I updated it. My update took 29 minutes. Sky Moblie TV also works now.

YES!!!!!!

Can't beat the burble of that American V8. Ohh yea!

What was your original product code?

What did you change it to prior to the upgrade?

Did you change it back to the original afterwards?

Did you lose anything ie contacts after the update?

Just back from Perth and used the N95 over there, had pre loaded USA OZ and NZ maps before. As you all know the NZ maps are fairly limited still, with only major rds listed. GPS lock in the states was variable and took too long. However in Perth Australia it worked Great. Lock took seconds . Pointing the reciever towards the northern sky really helps. Also Perth is so open that was great too. Route planner worked like a charm and took me straight to a local address I typed in from Cottesloe to Fremantle.
Entering addresses needs to be more user freindly.
On the negative side, despite me having USA pre loaded, my vodafone bill for my time in San Fran and San Diego was 500$!!!! and I didn't make that many calls, wonder if it was the maps, as it still connects to the network even when you have the map already. Will break down the bill in more detail, just got the bill update via the phone.
ANy other bills in for using GPS?

Hi,

My original product code was: 0549001

I changed my code to "EURO 1- Sand", which was: 0534841. I was going to use "France", but "EURO 1" offered French as well and I knew that it had worked from what other people had said other people.

I changed my product code back to my the original one afterwards.

I lost everything that wasn't on the memory card (I took the memory card out before I updated. Also, I have heard that you shouldn't back up your phone onto your memory card because information from one area's firmware isn't compatible with another area's firmware and that if you do try install old data from the memory card, that it will stuff up the phone. Data that is already on the memory card, e.g. music, videos, etc. still work fine and are OK). I also lost things like maps for the GPS and the landmark data for the GPS (I thought that it was on the memory card but apparently it isn't). I also lost my contacts, previous text messages and applications like Sports Tracker.

For things like the contacts, I would save them to the SIMcard but for things like the map data, I'm not sure what you can do about that.

I would definitely recommend updating the firmware.

P.s. When you change your product code, you should have the phone on "PC Suit" not "Mass Storage". There is a video on YouTube by a New Zealand guy about how to do this.

For the route planner/ directions, you have to download the directions as you go, they aren't preloaded so that is where your cost came from as data in the USA would be a ridiculous expensive being on roaming and such.

You would be better off buying a new SIMcard in the USA and then somehow having your calls forwarded to your Vodafone number from your American number.

Well have finally done the firmware update. Although a nerve-wracking experience it all proceeded very quickly and easily, a lot quicker that re-downloading the NZ map! Why is that so slow?
Now to see what has been improved.

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

S2G server is damn slob but another problem is that writing maps on the card is also slow because map comes into numerous small files spreaded over the 272 folder under cache directory. . .. BTW: Just chk, and NZ map is pretty small, just 5 MB!?!?? How detailed it is? My lovely Croatia has map of 150 MB!?

There are 2 people over on n95 users the have got 4Gb micro sd cards to work on there n95. This
is the best news.

The NZ map is very sparse, currently navigation is not available here. We are hoping this will all change when the phone is officially released ere by Vodafone but I am starting to have some doubts on that.

Hey are you sure those cards are "micro sd" not just sd?? Seem very cheep and im not sure if 4gb micro are even in nz yet?

Will be good to have 4+ gb on phone tho.

In fact, I'm not. They are cheap, that's why I was surprised. They probably aren't Micro SD. Oh well, I'll see what I can find out.

EDIT: I cannot confirm what type they are on PriceSpy.

I updated firmware, I noticed no difference whatsoever, all the little quirks are still the same
The only thing which drives me mad about this phone is the "sharpness" turns itself back to "normal" once I setup USERMODE and exit and re-enter camera! UGH!!!
I might have to delve into the filesystem, It turns out some stunning picture when that sharpeness is set to "soft" aka, OFF.
this was the same prior to the update.....

I have chopped out that bright red LED light that come on while in recordmode too, That was the one and only major, "unchangeable" peeve.... Gone! ha ha ha....

With the GPS data, when I updated the firmware, all of my maps and landmarks were lost. I thought that they were on the memory card but apparently not. I can still find some guidance instructions on the memory card, (under: Private/ 20001f63/ english/ config (this is an XML document).

Where have my maps and landmarks gone and is there anyway that I can get them back as I can't be bothered setting all of the landmarks again as that would take forever.
