So very true, I'm going to the game without my iPhone and git a brutal reminder of how hateful playing music is.

I'm ever hopeful that Nokia will ship a player that's at least as good as the N8 (yeah, I've set my sights low).

Had another go at trying to find a music player in the store, but that's full of the usual fraud and deception, so 1 more hour of music-less public transport.

edit: I don't think 3rd party apps can replace the inbuilt software, which may explain why they appear to be dreadful.

Fraud. For example, try searching for "Chrome" and you will find apps that aren't made by Google, some aren't free and some aren't event a browser - just an icon that launches Internet Explorer. Or Tinder, which demanded Microsoft remove 6Tindr (made by a Microsoft MVP who's got a track record of making great apps), while leaving all those paid apps that are using the Tinder name (and some of them just show pictures, don't allow you to actually do anything).

Microsoft could cut the Store by 1/3 if it removed all those crap/fake apps...

Seriously, why is the Windows Phone app situation as bad as it is?

I have a Windows Phone and there is a lot going for the OS. Considering the amount of money Microsoft has throwing some at the developer community would seem an easy fix for what is there major problem.

indeed they could, but I guess if they tried they would be accused of being anticompetitive. I remain with just mPass, Kindle, Facebook and iMDB on my WP8, that are not supplied by MS or Nokia.

I succumbed and  went and bought a Spark Nokia Lumia 520  off Trademe for $70..

Comments.

Easy to set up with Spark SIM.  Also tested with 2Degrees SIM .  APNs populated OK..  Google and Outlook accounts setup and  downloaded  OK etc..  Considering that this is a bottom end phone it was quite quick..

Things I liked.

  1. Double tap to wake up screen,
  2. Camera button (all phones should have one)
  3. Dialing keypad nice.

Things I didn’t like.

  1.  That keyboard.  After using Swiftkey for the past year or so I find the Windows one somewhat lacking.  Mainly no long press second function keys, always having to go to the numeric pad to enter say one number.  Microsoft needs to do what Apple has done and open up this part of the OS.
  2. No Spark app in the app store.  Used the web shortcut method that seems to work.
  3. The 2Degrees app needs a bit of work..

Generally a nice interface and could like with it but will give it another week.

One thing.  When I go to change the ring tones is there any way of previewing what they sound like??

Will run it passed the wife acceptance factor tonite..

Regards,

Old3eyes

Keyboard, it doesn't sound like you have Windows Phone 8.1 installed?

1.  Could you describe the long press second function key.  What I do to hit numbers, is touch the &123 button then drag my finger up to number in one swipe
2. try My Telecom app

ringtones do have a preview, just hit the play button to the left of the name

press the triangle play button to preview ringtones.

I don't think the 2D apps are official.

Hi Nathan.

About Phone says "Software Windows Phone 8.1

Thanx for tip on the ring tones.  I should have seen that :-)

Long press is when the keypad has a second layer  of numbers or symbols under the letter keys.  When you hold down the  letter key the number etc  appears instead.  A short press give the letter..

I couldn't find a "My Telecom" or "My Spark"  app in the app store..

Old3eyes

try the drag finger thing I suggested, it works well if you only have to enter 1 number

I have "My Telecom" and "Your Telecom" installed, not sure why you can't find them, maybe they rebranded them or something

Check for updates. Windows Phone has a swift keyboard that is better than others - and even without that I found the Windows Phone keyboard to be heaps better than Android in terms of key spacing, responsiveness and accuracy on predicting words.

what is the best windows phone around the size of the outgoing iphone (but as big a screen as possible)? tempted to have a play but don't want to pay more than $100-$200

Swype on iOS is detrimental to accurate typing. Apologies in advance.
