You can enable Cortana by changing your region, keboard, language and speech settings to United States English. This will also enable Quiet Hours & Inner Circle.

I like the quiet hours feature, enough to enable it.

I hard reset one of my test WP8.1 preview handsets and the initial setup is much better than WP8. You get to pick your language, WiFi network (incl hidden SSID) then sign in with MS account and get the option to restore from backup. Restore reloads all the installed apps and settings including tiles formation on the start screen. Even re-loaded the work exchange account setup (did ask to enter password for the account). Same restore as Windows 8.1 on tablets/pc. Very cool.

Just testing this update on someones phone, who uses large font. Initial impressions are the features and improvements are good, but now some of the new changes don't use the system wide font setting, eg the notification area and new calendar have some really small font.

Fine for me, not so good for people with poor eyesight!

Have been playing with 8.1 since it came and it has been pretty good so far.

However I just let the phone go into battery saver mode and now it's playing up quite badly.

It first become really unresponsive - sometimes multiple button presses required for it to do anything then it started freezing completely  - doesn't respond to any key presses or being put on charge etc had to do a soft reset

It started back up ok then froze again straight away - soft reset again and it came back ok and seems to work ok now.

I'll let it charge fully then see what happens next time.

Well it DID order my Pizza Hut pizza with the new Chili-Dog crust....

Overall my experience is pretty top notch. However I have found a new gripe:

  1. Music App

Lord but it's SLOW to open

How much music do you locally/cloud

It is the developer preview program, updates are coming for all these apps shortly, Skype etc.

WP has moved a lot of features out as apps so they can be updated much quicker than WP8 where you had to wait for a OS upgrade

There is about 10GB on the SD card but no cloud music (this is NZ after all).

Joe Belfore tweeted that the Music app has an inbound update and the current app is just a repurposed version of the Xbox Music app released a few months back. I'll live with the issues until then, the trade off is totally worth it

I'm loving 8.1 on my Lumia 925, and so far haven't had any issues (even Cortana seems to work pretty well). Surprisingly the action centre hasn't been all that useful to me, but all the little fix/improvements have made using the phone more enjoyable. For example:
1. When you download a new app it doesn't take your to the apps list assuming I was done with the store
2. The alarms tile shows the up-coming alarm more relatively - I used to have to turn the alarm off and on before it would show on the tile
3. Moving between apps/screens is a bit faster
4. Adding a new contact is much simpler and quicker
5. I think the removal of Facebook integration was the right move. With deeper OS integration features wont necessarily be lost, but will be up to the app developer to provide.
6. Home screen backgrounds are great, love the way they were implemented.
7. The experience in general is a lot more consistent across the OS, although not perfect yet
8. Stoked to finally have quiet hours - really missed that feature from my old phone's
9. Speed dial!!!

Sure there's more...Step in the right direction MS!!

Project my Screen software has been released. This will mirror your phone on to a display if you are running Windows Phone 8.1 via a micro USB cable. This is not Miracast. Miracast support will be added for Nokia Lumia 1520, Lumia Icon and Lumia 930 when the Nokia Cyan firmware update is released in couple of months.

Plug the phone into your PC first before you start installing the below software.

That's pretty handy. It was a bit fiddly to get working on my Lumia 925 - I had to go to devices and printers and remove the phone, then plug it back in, wait for drivers to install, then run the app on the phone then PC.

Microsoft also started sales of its first Windows Phone 8.1 handset, the Nokia 630 available in Asia first.
