Heavenly_Wild, if the N97 you have is from Asia, then only the asian maps will be preloaded onto the phone, not New Zealand. So you can either let the network download the maps as you go like Googlemaps, or use the Maps loader application - to put all of NZ and up to 200 other countries onto the phone.

Well I suppose with time everything is going to be compatible - it's like Blu-ray and HD-DVDs. Wait a few years and perhaps all these different formats will eventually transform into one standard to make life easy for manufacturers and users:)

They wouldn't want to load the whole world maps on the device, it would use up too much memory

I have loaded 300mb worth of maps onto my phone. I think as it is an early firmware it is a little buggy. The maps do show of NZ and other countries but sometimes it doesn't.

Apart from finding where you are (AGPS), what else would the device need internet for when you are driving from point A to point B?

If the maps for the country are on the device then once it connects to the GPS satellites it shouldn't need the internet for anything else.

With OVI maps (Maps 3.0) you can see weather reports/terrain view, which uses internet to pull down the results

It must be the quality you guys are talking about that is causing the videos to stutter. The screen is only so big so if you downsize the quality I am sure you won't notice it.

Your absolutely right, it does, just figured that a 2009 top model phone should be able to play avi's loaded straight from a computer, without converting.

I'm sure my pentium 75 could play full screen movies.

Of course I could convert my movies to play flawlessly on the Nokia N97...but why shoudl I have too?

This is, supposevly Nokia's 'flagship' mobile, which has 32GB storage to be used, and records nHD video in widescreen...obviously recording, and playing, are two different things.

heavenly_wild, I would recommend you use Nokia Map Loader to relaod your maps, 300MB sounds pretty big for NZ Maps (as an example I've loaded NZ and Australia and it was less than 150MB. You can also delete any maps you don't need via the same program.

I used the Nokia Maps Loader...the download was 300MB.

It may include other countries, I don't know...I just downloaded and installed it all.
Works beautifully.

I have just updated the original list of Bugs (first post)...is anyone else noticing the same issues?

Joikuspot works perfectly...initial concerns operator error.

Enabled my N97 as a hotspot, my HTPC connected with no problems, and I encrypted the network as well in second test.

What I was doing wrong intially, was actually so simple....JoikuSpot could not enable a hotSpot, as my N97 WLAN was already in use, connected to my HTPC automatically by default as I have setup previously...disabling that wifi connection, allowed for the N(& WLAN to enable a hotspot....beauty.

Really strange, how some bugs just seem to fix themselves (or maybe not)...my recorded video is now showing up in the video Ap...which is good, but strange.

Nimbuzz (IM intergrator for Windows Live, Google, FaceBook, Skype etc)
Keylock Clock (Gives you a nice large clock on the screen when you press the menu key when the handset is locked)

Far out just updated to v11 - what an easy process! Alot faster than my previous N95. Nokia, well done on the NSU!

Took 2 minutes to install after the download.

The handset won't play general AVI files but should be capable of playing h.264 files.

most video players use software to decode the file but x-plore (and other applications) just sends the data to the hardware but in this case it looks like it might be different which is a bit of a pain. Coreplayer for example has it's own decoders built-in but performace can be sluggish. Nokia have always been a bit tardy about supporting "open and common" formats, somewhere though I assembled up a rather efficient h.264 video converter from a collection of scripts and some common codecs. (i think it was mencoder)

That Nimbuzz is a good litle app, just installed it myself and impressed, yet to test its full functionality though....added it to the first post list.
