I have turned off the auto screen rotation features on my N97 and it has speed up remarkably, it seems to work like a fast cheap phone now. ;)

I would try that, but I like that feature too much.

Here is the full list of updates for those who have not looked:
- Maps 3.1 - the latest version of Ovi Maps. This replaces Nokia Maps 2.0 that shipped with the device.
- N97 C: Phone memory update - a helper application to free space on the internal memory drive.
- N-Gage application 1.3 - adds the N-Gage games service to the Nokia N97.
- Ovi Contacts 1.2 - adds the Ovi Contacts/Chat service, this is Nokia's presence and IM service.
- Nokia Messaging 10.0 - adds the Nokia Messaging service (consumer push email) to the N97, which can be used to replace the email functions of the Messaging application.

Well worth a look...

I have only been able to receive/download the N97 C: Phone memory update so far myself...trying to source the rest manually, but not having much luck (for the latest versions, or at all with N-Gage)

Hey all i got my N97 two days ago and found a couple of things quite annoying.

Some forums when using the qwerty keyboard doesnt allow me to type in lower case, i gotta hold the shift key down the whole time.

Another is the email client. Its connected to my network internet (O2) it tells me i have new email but doesnt retrieve it. I gotta connect again to do it. I set it all up like it was on my N95 but its only getting the headers and then disconnecting immediately.

Another is when i add pictures to my phone via connecting on my laptop using "mass memory" it puts all my pictures into the "download" folder. Then i have to add them to my own folders but it doesnt allow you to delete them from the "download" folder. It duplicates them which is quite irritating. If yhou do delete them from "download" folder it permently removes them from the phone! Im a bit fussy with neatness and to me my photo folder looks like a mess!

A couple of questions, whats the number you have to push to find out what software your using? Also does the nokia maps or ovi maps require an internet connection to work? I always though you had to connect to the net to use the sat nav on here?

Can i use the NSU that i used with my N95 8GB to update my N97?

Thanks guys :)

Also one more thing, i know you can update the phone like a pc now, however where is the back up thing on the phone, where you back up the contents before performing a software update??

BrentR: You can turn of that new email pop up by following the steps below.

Menu> Applications> MfE> Mail for Exchange> Options> Edit Profile> Email> Show New Mail pop up> No

Doh! I knew it would be there, just couldn't see if for looking!

Regarding the carkit - funnily enough I deleted the Carkit paired device and it still didn't work then yesterday it just started working!  In and out of the car all day and everytime it paired automatically and changed profiles etc - everything as it was meant to do.  I see some mobile phone accessory websites (Expansys, MobileFun.uk etc) do list the Nokia Ck-7w as a compatable device!

I've had the N97 C: Phone memory update and the Nokia Messaging 10.0 updates showing up.  The Phone memory update installs successfully - although its appeared on my list twice more since updating, each time it tells me it has installed successfully but there is no new icon anywhere on the phone and my free memory on C: might have gone up by 0.5mb or so... In fact on checking again this morning - its back again!

Yesterday the Nokia Messaging 10.0 just failed everytime I tried to install it - with the extremely useful message "Installation Failed". Tried rebooting etc but made no difference.  Then this morning it installed fine.

All that makes me think they're updating the updates all the time?  Without necessarily changing the version numbers?

Tiff777: Some forums when using the qwerty keyboard doesnt allow me to type in lower case, i gotta hold the shift key down the whole time.

That must be annoting...have not seen that myself.
I have noticed some things not working in forums using the N97...I wonder if it is due to the default N97 browser...may I suggest trying Opera Mini, very popular.

Another is the email client. Its connected to my network internet (O2) it tells me i have new email but doesnt retrieve it. I gotta connect again to do it. I set it all up like it was on my N95 but its only getting the headers and then disconnecting immediately.

Without knowing exactly what your setings are, its hard to offer correct advice

In the N97, there are the following settings;
- Connection setings (Access point is use for both incoming and ougoing)
- User setings (send message, new email alerts)
- Retrieval settings (email retrieval  selec your choice)
- Automatic retrieval (email retrieval - enable, retrieval days, retieval hours, retrieval interval)

Check all those settings in the brackets, they are all crucial to setting up your email to connect and download imediately

I too am pedantic like that, and one of the bugs wih the N97 picture viewer is photos added via mass storage/PC do not instantly show up in the pitcure viewer....

Bu I am afraid I do not have an answer to your specific quesion, have not seen that happen on mine

whats the number you have to push to find out what software your using?

*#0000#

Also does the nokia maps or ovi maps require an internet connection to work? I always though you had to connect to the net to use the sat nav on here?

To my understanding (Brent could proberly beter answer this question) most maps are already on your mobile and there is no need to connect to the net...but, should your mobile require maps you do no have stored on your mobile, it then connects and retrieves those maps...

The GPS is required at all times, as that is what is used topinpoint you on the map.

Can i use the NSU that i used with my N95 8GB to update my N97?

I am not sure, but the N97 came included with the latest Ovi Suite which included NSU anyway...I gather it is the same.

Hope some of that helps.

I do not have an extra memory card installed.

I too have noticed performance improvements...less crashing...but I will give it time before geting too excited.

I also went through the process of uninstalling every app, and reinstalling them on the mass memory drive.
Some could not be installed on the mass memory though, only on the phone memory, such as Sports Tracker, Ovi Store and Shazam.

Re: The Bartender.

With regards to the email. Its set up to connect retrieve the email alert me and then stay connected so i can open them up. This connection on the N95 worked wonderfully however on the N97 it just connects gets the headers only and then immediately disconnects making me reconnect to get the contents of the email.

I find this email issue to be very frustrating if not the most frustrating of all.

Looking at the email settings it doesn't crudar that there hr any other setting other than "Headers Only" in the retrieval amount settings. My email is set up via Imap as this alerted me quicker to an email than a pop3 account. Pop3 i found myself having to connect and check manually, does anyone have any ideas as to how to go about resolving this or can anyone suggest an app that hr free that will automatically check and alert and download my emails for free via Imap?

Tonight now yep, leaving Pukekohe in 2.5 hours for the 7-8 hour drive down, I'll be in the back seat asleep though :-)

Well...that was a frustrating expereince...

Another excellent Geekzone affair hosted by MF, well done...
But my N97 failed to impress.

I have not hard reset yet, but its now looking likely, due to a major problem with my music libary...
The N97 does not like having file moved onto, and deleted, when in mass media drive mode...
Obviously, it only likes files moved onto and off it using the Ovi Suite, which I have not properly used yet.

Another big bug bear I found tonight...was trying to pos a simple link to a Qik video I streamed live/uploaded...
The default browser did not show the twitter link that appears in a full browser, and nor does it show the internet address to copy...
Even when I went through the inconviant process of copting he internet address via a tx I sent myself...I was then given no way to paste that copied address....ugh.

Either I still have alot to learn...or this S60 OS is an a@#*

I played with a few iPhone 3GS tonight....and also MF's WinMo mobile...and they were fast, really responsive, easy to use....

I am trying to stay positive, but I really am losing my enthusiasm for the N97.

Its slow.
Its buggy.
Is difficult/illogical to use.
Many settings are missing or dont do what they are told.
Files dont appear in their logical homes.
Ugh.
