John2010: OK, I think I have sorted the start up failure issue with JoikuSpot that I had. It seems it doesn't like anything else trying to share the same access point when it starts and takes a bit of time/a few goes to grab control. My email accounts had the AP open for themselves and when I changed them to Always Ask then JoikuSpot seems to start with no delay.

Was a useful way to fill in a cold windy afternoon at sea.

lyonrouge: Out of interest I tried downloading JoikuSpot again from my user area in the store while logged in. It tried to charge me the $2 too at which point I bailed out. But I got the impression that was because it detected that I already had the application on the phone. However, I was not game enough to uninstall it to see whether it would still want to charge me.

Anyway, I think Nik owes you $13 and me $2.99 Wink. About the increased customers at the store Nik, I find that BetaLabs is becoming an increasingly interesting place to visit too.

It tried to charge me and I had nothing on the phone (post hard reset). I might try harassing Joiku some more.

The official process here is to contact Ovi Customer support and ask them to reset the download limit for you. There's another recent thread in the Symbian forum here on geekzone that discusses positive results here.

lyonrouge: Ah, tip for hard resetting, when you press down-volume/camera/menu/power together, release the power first after (I was releasing menu first and that cancelled the reset)

Or you can dial * # 7370 #from the dialler screen (this does a factory reset on any Symbian device and all new S40 devices). The power-on key combination is only required if you some how can't access the dialler.

Thanks, I had read conflicting accounts of what the dialler reset actually did, i.e. user data wipe only or factory reset, but that clears it up should I have to hard reset again.

ps. do you know if the N8 supports the ActiveSync Remote Wipe feature?

I only have 2003 currently. Migrating to 2010 and was going to use remote wipe to clear all the phones before establishing new connections to 2010 (importantly, record the device ID Exchange creates for the devices so I know which is which). Instead, I'll use the following to clear the device and verify that it performs the same hard reset as the key combination.

I'll use * # 7370 #from the dialler screen

Dialler hard reset (* # 7370 #) is actually more agressive that the key combination one, and clears all user data and applications. When I reset using key combination, the angry birds, photos and videos remained, but with dialler reset, everything was cleared.

Ever since I first reset my N8 I have never had another problem... The only thing I have is with the Ovi store, and that is that the payment process never works. It always says that the payment process is currently unavailable... So its luck if you get it while its working. Other than that I havent had any problems... But I suppose thats not really a problem... Just annoying that I can never buy any apps.

I don't know if I have a temprimental unit or if it how I use it, i.e. connecting to an exchange account that is also synchrised to 7 different mobile devices, all of which are different vendors.

I have a different Store issue in that if I go to the store from a PC, log in and select an application and get it to text me the link to prceed to purchase/downloading it when I select the link in the received text message on the phone it always gives me an invalid link message and fails (it didn't used to do that though).

However, if I go to the store from the phone, log in and search for the application I want everything works perfectly including it's wanting to take my money.

I just completed another hard reset (using the keypad code) and now OVI store will not start (the waiting circle appears forever). May try the keypad code and then 4-button combination to perform a hard-hard reset.

Have you tried clearing the Web cache and then browsing to store.ovi.com?

I hadn't considered this, where does one "clear the web cache" (google gave me many results, none on the first page were even close).

In the browser, under Options --> Clear Privacy Data --> Cache, an action was performed but this did not help OVI store.

That process did work, but I would dread it if I had bought a lot of applications, I had to actually talk to some customer representative (judging from call quality and accent, I'm guessing Indai) to send me text messages with links for my purchased applications, quite clunky.

Note: I ignored there calls initially as I assumed they were scammers.

BrentR: Hi Starplay,

You need to change the following settings within the handset

Menu > Settings > Phone > Display > Welcome Note/Logo > Set to image or text.

Did anyone get this to work?

I still get the big red blob when I start my N8 and then it shows the image or text.
But I think what people are wanting, is to get rid of it altogether.

As I'm unable to address the OVI store application issue, I'm planning another hard reset, before doing so I'm wanting to know if I can backup the applications on the OVI desktop software but not the phone configuration, i.e. I do not want to restore a broken configuration after restart, but I do want the applications restored?

If you have installed all of your apps onto the memory card then this is as simple as removing your memory card during the factory reset. All applications that don't store vital files on the phone memory should be restored when you put the memory card back in, including their settings and saved games.

Just about all third party and most Nokia apps can be installed on the memory card. If you haven't done this then the best way would be to tick all of the backup options except for device settings when running a backup in Ovi Suite. I'm not 100% on how thoroughly the suite backs up your apps though.

Is this relevant:  (from http://support.quickoffice.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=190)

ie how to Back up to Memory Card - I do not know if the same applies for newer Symbian

Quickoffice restore after Firmware Upgrade CAUTION

For S60 3rd edition devices: How do I restore my Quickoffice after upgrading the firmware on my phone?

....

*Nokia states on their website:

Personal data such as contacts, photos and messages stored in the phone memory ("as Quickoffice is") will be deleted during a phone software update. It is strongly recommended that you backup this data to your memory card before updating your phone software.
To backup to your memory card:
1. select Tools>Memory from the main menu
2. select Optinos> Backup phone mem.

After you upgrade your firmware, transfer the .sis file you received when you purchased Quickoffice to your device and re-run the installation. You will need the unlock code that was provided on the initial purchase (if this has been misplaced please contact Technical Support by opening a ticket at http://support.quickoffice.com). When the order has been verified you will be sent the unlock code specific to your device.

After installing Quickoffice, restore your backup to phone memory:
1. select Tools> Memory from the main menu
2. select Options>Restore from card
