ahmad: I have one sealed but intend to keep it. At what stage does it become profiteering though? I'd say everyone here would take one with a $50 premium. That's probably 100 people just watching this thread. Does that make $100 premium over the top? $200?

The profiteering becomes over the top once the device gets to a stage where the price is no longer attractive to the vast majority. For me, the price is no longer attractive once it exceeds $250.

The intent was that this was going to be the Christmas present for my daughter. After a display of selflessness earlier this year that ultimately resulted in us being able to donate over $500 to CanTeen on her behalf, it would've been great to be able to say to her "Santa must reckon you were pretty good this year. Looks like you were on the 'Very nice' list".

She desperately wanted an iPad, but I can't justify spending that amount of money on her (nor do I have that much even if I could justify it). This is the most attractive alternative I've seen, and the limit I quote above is all I'm able to spend. This may mean I'm pitching my offer to be far too low to be competitive, but if I don't pitch it at all I have zero chance of hooking up with an interested seller.

Don't take this personally but you have to remove the emotion from this and answer it without the other influences.

What I'm saying is that noone would turn it down for $250 - doesn't that mean the price is theoretically being sold below fair value?

I mentioned it being $150 to my mum and she said even at the price shed prefer a netbook, so its not everyone

Absolutely nothing wrong with profiteering. It is obviously in hot demand and that will dictate the price. Well done for people been able to get their hands on them!

Nope, thats Dad's toy :-)

Besides, she knew about that before we knew about the TouchPad firesale (and therefore had planned that as a possible Christmas gift)

Hehe. I don't take it personally. And I also realize that such an emotive plea won't carry much weight on a technical forum. But no guts no glory. :-)

It entered my mind briefly but I ended up ranking my 3 options as follows:

[1] Keep it because it's a rare item that may become a bit of a cult hit. And it will be impossible to rebuy if I change my mind.

[2] Sell to a friend that missed out for what I paid for it.

[3] Sell on Trademe presuming someone would pay $400 or even $500 (ie. Still 3rd ranked even if I could get $500)

Sorry but I would also
At $137-163 it was fine, but anything over that, I could just buy a keyboard dock for my Transformer, which I'll probably do now anyway

Since the the Touchpad will be stuck with a non-tablet optimized OS for a while. Aka 2.3.3/4, until the Gingerbread source is released in a few months. Till then it's basically a big phone for me, without the sim

I have moved across the ditch. Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

ITD pulled an Acquire. No on-hand stock at all. Published "in-stock" level based on distributor database. Overpromised and once they have it confirmed from distributor that no stock is coming, under-deliver.

One of my coworkers talked to a guy from HP today and learned that they've sold 6000 units over the past few days. They apparently don't have any more.

My OnSale (Amazon) order is still showing as "shipping soon". From Slickdeals:
"At this time, we regret that we have determined we will not have sufficient clarity in a timely manner regarding additional availability of product to allow us to fill remaining unfulfilled orders. Unfortunately as a result, we are now cancelling unfulfilled orders and expect this process to be completed shortly. Customers whose orders are being canceled will receive a cancelation notice via e-mail. No credit cards have been charged for any unfulfilled orders."

I have not received a cancellation notice and my card has been charged. I'm not holding my breath but we'll see what happens!
