The xbox360 only has 512mb of ram, look what was accomplished with that limited amount! Consoles don't have the overhead a pc has, there is no need for 16gb of ram, heck unless your doing serious video editing or virtual machines there's no need for that much in your desktop pc. Im glad the TAB wasn't running bets on the specs because i was all in for 4gb.
Im excited for this new generation, maybe not for the consoles themselves but the fact that games will no longer be held back by the weak hardware these 7 year old machines have.

16GB is not that much.
Of all components on any console generation (NeoGeo aside, possibly) memory is always always the limiting factor.
However, memory is arguably the one component that depreciates in manufacturing cost the most over time. 18 months from now 16GB of GDDR5 won't seem that much, let alone 3-4 years. Crumbs, my home PC has 16GB of (albeit DDR3) RAM, and high-end gaming PCs with 32GB have been available for a while now.
Dedicated frame buffer memory is one reason the PS3 suffered somewhat against the 360.

That's what I enjoyed about the 1980's - early 1990's. Hardware refresh cycles were positively pedestrian, before the (IBM compatible) PC became mainstream. Software really pushed hardware back in those days, to-the-metal coding was the norm.

To be honest, I've been somewhat underwhelmed with the "quality" of games this generation overall. Personally, I reckon the previous gen (PS2/Xbox/GC/DC) provided a much better selection.
I also felt the up-scaled 1080 graphics and/or low-res textures (that's a symptom of not enough memory btw) of many PS360 titles was a bit of a let down.

One could argue the PS4/720/WiiU are the consoles we should've had for 1080 in the first place.

I think you'll find that the hardware this generation will be "held back" just as much as it was (and always is) in every generation.

Sony, what have you been doing for the past 6 years?

I wondered about this too. I think the answer is comparing the PS3 GPU which, I believe, rated about 0.4 TFLOPS to the PS4 GPU.

All round, about a high end PC, but not the most powerfull around for likely economic reasons.

I believe the 1.8 TFLOPS was simply a Sony marketing figure - I think it was attributed to the RSX. It's hard to go past Sony, when it comes to hype versus reality.
Although, a lot of people do buy into it. The PS2 came with lashings of hype, and to Sony's credit - it worked quite well.

AFAIK Sony is still hemorrhaging money. Apparently, they've lost a bucket load on the PS3. I think the only last (current?) gen console to actually make a healthy profit (over it's existing lifetime) is the original Wii.

Sony and MS both play the loss-leader game. They played it fairly heavily with the PS3 & 360 - although Sony was losing more due to Bluray, and a last-minute NVIDIA GPU.
Both the RSX and Xenos were cutting edge GPUs at the time of release. The RSX was basically a cut-down 7800GTX (8 ROPs instead of 16, and slower memory) - NVIDIA's top GPU card at the time, and the Xenos was the first GPU to implement unified shaders - which was later used in the Radeon HD 2000 series, and subsequently adopted by NVIDIA in the Geforce 8 series cards.

Compared to the top end GPUs available today, it is a major come-down in relative performance from 7 years ago.
And, yes - definitely for economic reasons.

Personally was surprised by the 8 gig of ram but still can't wait to hear what MS will pull out. Was it just me or did others think it was weird not to see the console. I'm thinking the guys onstage were either not really playing the console or just playing through a dev kit.

There was a nice look to the new interface and some of the features touted however background downloading of titles you may like is not really something I'd be keen to have enabled at any time (unless lotto comes my way soon). I also found it odd that massive storage was mentioned for hard drive space but no actual figure on how big. With 500 gig consoles already out you would have to think that they're talking at least 1 TB or larger as this may be needed if you have a console downloading full games in the background for 5 + years before the next gen comes along.

Correction.

The 7800GTX hadn't even been released when the PS3 reveal occurred at E3 2005. I think the top NVIDIA GPU at the time was the Geforce 6800 Ultra.
Which meant the PS3 was being designed with the fastest next-gen-still-to-be-released (NVIDIA) GPU money could buy. The 7800GTX was released the a month after the PS3 reveal.

I remember the incredible anticipation during, and post E3 for the PS3. The impression was of an insanely powerful console that would simply obliterate all others.
The pre-rendered movies, the fight night "demo", rubber duck demo etc etc - only added to the hype. The incredible "potential" of the Cell - it was some serious momentum.

Then the actual games started coming out.....

I'm guessing they were just dev kits. The actual/final PS4 h/w won't be known until at least another 6-9 months from now (you'll notice the disclaimer at the bottom of the PS4 press releases "*Specifications subject to change without notice").
The 8GB is nice. I doubt Sony want to get caught out again with lack-of-memory issues.
However, I wouldn't be surprised if they up the ante if MS decided to put 16GB into the 720 - that would be interesting.

I can;t imagine that will be the standalone price though, surely that would be for a bundle including some games/accerrories as it just seems too high

The last two generations were more than that, weren't they? I think it went $750, $1000, $1200 for each generation.

PS3 was definitely $1200 on realease. I would expect the PS4 to be about the same but any more than that and they'll be losing sales. If it was to be under $1000 they'd possibly make a few more early sales, but if you've ever looked in PSN Store everything is overpriced in the part of the world (except the PlayStation+ freebies of course).
