Rumour has it the PS4 was originally intended to require the move motion connector to be always connected and on
Xbox One still requires the kinect motion controller to be connected and on

This requirement was to help encourage game developers experiment/support augmented reality which promised to be the most interesting aspect of the next gen

(Google search Xbox augmented reality/occulus for more AR info)

Has Sony damaged augmented reality chances by making the move motion controller optional to lower the price?

If the move device isn't purchased/connected by PS4 purchasers will game companies still invest in this tech or just play it safe and make basically what we have now?

As of the moment, such gimmicks are for casuals. Forcing them on gamers will not increase uptake until the technology actually matures enough to surpass the current gaming experience.

No.

Google glass, and similar products, will enable augmented reality much better than anything a games console could have done IMO.

Agreed above. Augmented reality as in Google Glass where real world is enhanced with relevant information being presented as needed is a whole lot different than a video game (virtual world) with an expanded input system (camera).

Different kind of augmented reality
Google glass augments the real world with a head mounted information display
Microsoft is researching augmenting the virtual world with the real (beyond the borders of your TV)
Now a headset that covers the eyes and ears and blends the real world via cameras and mics with the virtual could be interesting!
