Topic # 123484 9-Jul-2013 15:25

I have a Dell XPS 15 which I use to play mainly sports games, FIFA 13, NBA 2K13 etc which all run perfectly fine on max settings with the laptop plugged into my monitor via vga cable (with a mini displayport converter). The monitor is full HD so I play both the games in full HD with no lag or any problems whatsoever.

As soon as I use an HDMI cable instead of VGA, the framerate drops occasionally whilst playing, does anyone know any reasons for this? I've tried 3 different HDMI cables on 2 different TV's (both full HD) and on my monitor.

Everything else works fine when connected via HDMI, watching movies, browsing the internet etc so the problem is just when I'm playing games which I'm confused about as the games work fine when the laptop is connected to the monitor via VGA. None of the TV's I've tried can support VGA at 1920x1080 so that's no help.

The only thing that I can think of is that I'd need to buy a better quality HDMI cable but I've read a few different opinions about them, some people say that the quality does make a difference and others that say that it doesn't make a difference.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

What resolution and FPS are you running the screen at via HDMI?

60 FPS. The game (FIFA) has options to have no limit on the frame rate so that's what I have it set on, but also has options to lock it to 60 too. It'll play around 10-20secs at 60 then drop down to 30-40 for a few seconds then go back up to 60.

I have the same problem as you. Quite surprised to see the frame rate drop for games when I connect to the TV via HDMI.

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if the resolutions were different or something like that but I can't understand why it would drop just because a different cable is being used.

In saying that I don't know a huge amount about different cables and their effects etc so it could be a fairly simple problem

Turn V-sync on and check your refresh rates.

There's an option "Wait for Vsync" which i had ticked, unticking that with no limit on fps got the frame rate up to around 74 during gameplay but it still kind of skipped frames.

With "Wait for Vsync" unticked and the frame rate locked at 60 the same thing still happened. Have tried changing around anti aliasing settings too but that didn't make a difference.

Anything on the Nvidia control panel that I should be checking/changing?

Edit: Turned Vsync on under the Nvidia Control panel, tried that on my 32inch panasonic tv and that worked perfectly fine.

Then tried it on our 55inch panasonic that has 3D, the frame rate started dropping to 40 again. Could it have something to do with trying to transmit a 3D signal to our TV which could cause the framerate to drop? A message pops up on the TV saying that a 3D signal has been detected but the game isn't in 3D, not sure which settings I'd have to change to get rid of the 3D signal output.

Does the lag problem happen with NBA2K13 or just FIFA?

Apparently all you need to do is disable the signal message on your tv.

I tried NBA a few days ago and it lagged, then I played it last night with friends and it didn't lag (I don't think I changed any settings), changed some settings now and it does lag so I'll have a play around with that and try and sort it out.

Disabling the 3D signal didn't do anything for FIFA, had a look at that bug fix page though, tried the Nvidia settings it recommended and that seemed to work perfectly.

Thanks a lot, appreciate your help.
