Second hand consoles are fine. Just make sure that you buy at minimum the slim model of both Xbox 360 and PS3.

edit - I have an Xbox 360 250GB HDD (Modern Warfare 2 edition/skin) (not slim btw so does not have built in WiFi card), Battlefield 3 and 2 controllers (wireless) for $130 + shipping

Do whatever you want to do man.

Get one from EB games. They come with 12 months warranty. Probably wouldn't buy a serving hand one from trademe etc.

Personally, with the Xbox 360, Id buy new because the price is pretty good..... PS3, is coming down but not as low as the 360 deals Ive seen around.

Problem with 2nd hand ones from somewhere like TM, is that you dont know what youre getting (going by sellers word), and youve got no real come back if the thing fails.
If you do go down the TM route, Id ask (and keep in mind a seller could be lying with their answer) why theyre selling, how often was it used, can you view the item before bidding or at least on pickup see it running. Check the vents, are they clear or full of dirt/dust (can lad to overheating - My PS3 vents get clogged and I clean them out every so often, unit runs quieter when this is done) - any tell tale marks on the unit around the screws if its been opened - how worn are the controllers (PS3 ones get very smooth on the main grips after a fair bit of use) - is it noisy when running.

Also, when deciding on what system you want, look at the features offered. And do you want to play games with friends, what system do they have. No fun playing GTA5 on a 360 online when all your mates have PS3 ;) (OK, its still a great game regardless but more fun when you know the ppl youre playing with ;) )

Might be not an issue for NZ. But just in case check that this console is not banned on gaming network.
This measure can be applied to cheating players and those who downloads games illegally.

As I understand in some cases it is console. The trick is that you can still play off-line games on that console, but not on-line.
