So with the PS3 prices being lowered to be similar to Xbox prices in both Canada and the US, do we anticipate that similar price drops will happen in our fair country? Somehow, I don't think it will - not when there's a chance for price-gouging by our retailers.

It does amuse me somewhat that, when our dollar is soaring as it is now, economists predict that electronics prices will drop. I don't know about you but I don't think I've seen evidence of that happening.

nah from history when import prices drop the retailers ride the profit, when ANYTHING costs more they cash in on the customers. sick!

I was under the impression that _console_ prices were set by ..... manufacturers (i.e. Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo).

There might be a very subtle variance in price between the main retailers, but basically they are all the same - excluding one-off specials (like the $99 PS2 opening day special at the local Noel Leeming a while ago - those sold out shortly after the store opened, surprise, surprise).

If we're getting "over charged" for a console in NZ (compared to the US or Japan), then you can blame the appropriate manufacturer for that, not the retailer.

One of the (minor) disadvantages of being on the other side of the world and having a small economy (relatively).

Look at the price of the wii in aus.. its $399.. over here its $499.. whats up with that!!

Definitly makes you think about getting one bought in from the US or HK.

At current exchange rate you could almost bring 2 in for the price of one here.
