They are not athletes, they are gamers, i have always wondered what idiots report and write this stuff

Sportsmen (and women)?  Yes.

I think the reason they use the word athlete is because all the overseas League of Legends players in the US league are under pro-athlete visas allowing them to work and compete in the US.

I don't know, I kind of think certain games are mentally challenging enough to be regarded a type of academic athleticism. :)

Honestly ???  I'm not sure I could claim to the doctor I was athletic if I was a gamer :-)

I wouldn't use the term athlete because its definition requires performing athletics which as far as I am aware, operating a digital device is not.

However, I would certainly use the term sportsperson because they are competing against each other and often formed into teams and put in a lot of time and effort to get to where they are at.
