scuwp: So if I understand correctly, to really get the fundamentals going we need to purchase

1 x game package deal (whatever is best at the time) circa $650
1 x play and charge kit circa $40
1 x extra controller with play and charge kit circa $110
1 x 12 month membership circa $60

I am guessing they need a special plug headset as well...so another $60 odd bucks?  Or will any standard gaming aux or USB headset work?

Boy this is starting to add up!!!

Someone said the PS4 comes with all this stuff as standard?

I would skip the version with the bundled Kinect camera (aside from in the likely event there are any Kinect-based games he is desperate to play!) and buy the cheaper version without it - save the difference or spend it on another game or some accessories.

This Assassin's Creed pack sans Kinect, but with 2 games is $569 from Mighty Ape.

I didn't think you could buy Kinect separately? So if you don't get one in the pack new you miss out for all eternity.

Available separately in NZ from end of this month...

I would save the money and get it without - I don't see there ever being a killer, must-have-app for the thing. It can be a fun gimmick for 10 minutes and that's about it.

Of course that's just me - other opinions are available!

I would not, the voice control the Kinect uses are great.  Just for things like "xbox pause" while watching a video.  or "xbox record that" when you do something cool in a game.  While the system will work without it, it's just not as good.

Horses for courses I guess!

I have never got any use out of voice control when there are remotes or buttons to be used....always seemed gimmicky to me.

Plus of course there is the prank factor - walk into the room when he is just about to beat a challenging level..."Xbox off!"

:D

I do that a lot with my little brother, now he's paranoid whenever I walk in the room and he's playing minecraft on his XBONE.

could be useful if your son goes overboard on the games

Ok, so we found the best deal and he is all set up with the couple of games that game with the package.  Next step I guess is to get him signed up to the Xbox Live Gold. Seems to be a couple of different versions around (?) standard retail about $80 for 12 months, or save a couple of bucks on Mighty Ape or NZ Gameshop.  I do also see offers on TM or Ebay for a bit less, they either just email you the code or send the card, feedback for the traders is really good.

  • Does it matter from which country I buy the membership/code?  (Ebay seems quite cheap)
  • Taking usual precautions, are the codes provided on TM likely to be legit?  (is there such a thing as hacked codes?)
  • Any other suggestions where the best place to get a Live Gold subscription?

Thanks

Selling codes bought with stolen credit cards is very common.

I would not risk it for the small saving.

Thanks.  I take it from that recommendation it doesn't matter where in the world we buy the code from?  I wasn't sure if it was regionally specific?

Shouldn't.  The region is normally at the account\device level.

Doesn't matter - I buy mine from  NZ Gameshop here or here - although the link posted above is a bit cheaper again.  They just e-mail the code and you pop it in on the Xbox.

Thanks. Tried the trial membership but there seems few extra hoops to jump through for that, including having to load a credit card so they can bill you automatically after...sneaky buggers.  They don't tell you that anywhere, only found out when we went online to find out why the trial membership wasn't working.  The voucher has been redeemed now so I think that's wasted.  Frustrating.

We are finding this system hardly intuitive for new users.

It can take a little getting used to and not everyones cup of tea but is quite powerful once you are used to it.  The good thing is there are monthly updates and each one makes it just a little bit better each time.

As for Live it used to be that certain codes were locked for certain regions so you needed to be sure you were buying a NZ region code otherwise you are signing up for a US region account.  The console region can be changed easily but the live is at account level which is not easy to change.  I typically use NZgameshop as they are trustworthy and regularly do deals around the $55-60 mark for 12-13 months.  Not entirely sure if this is still true.  Means the likes of Ebay and Amazon might not be the way to go....though there is a line of thought that a US account is better anyway but means that NZ dollars cards can't be used so have to buy off amazon.  I have my live on NZ region and can happily switch regions on console if needed for other things (eg Netflix in US etc).
